Just one day ahead of the opening game of the T20I series against India, Windies have suffered a massive blow. The star all-rounder Andre Russell has been ruled out from the T20I series due to failing to recover from the knee injury. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has also announced Russell’s replacement.
Windies and India will play a three-match T20I bilateral series from 3rd August to 6th August. They will play two back-to-back matches at Florida on 3rd and 4th August. Then, they will meet at Guyana to play the third and final T20I of this series.
The 31-year-old all-rounder Andre Russell was initially in the 14-member squad for the first and second T20I of this series. However, he still required to pass the fitness test before the series.
Russell faced the knee injury during the middle of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Due to that reason, he missed out the remainder of that tournament.
However, Russell recently returned to the game as he featured in the opening match of the Global T20 Canada 2019. But, he neither bowled nor batted in that game. The Vancouver Knights’ all-rounder experienced some discomfort during that tournament. Later, the all-rounder informed the interim selection panel of his unavailability of this T20I series.
Jason Mohammed has replaced Andre Russell
As the replacement of Andre Russell, the selectors have added Jason Mohammed in the T20I squad. The 32-year-old has played nine T20Is after his debut in April 2017. The right-handed batsman Mohammed has scored 90 runs in T20I career (average 18.00).
Since July 2018, Mohammed hasn’t played for Windies. He led the Windies T20I side in his last three T20Is when Windies toured Pakistan for the T20I series.
However, in the recent domestic cricket, he performed consistently.
The Windies interim head coach Floyd Reifer stated, “We welcome Jason Mohammed into the squad for the first two T20 matches here in Florida. He is a player with lots of experience in all three formats and – having done well for Trinidad & Tobago as well as Guyana Amazon Warriors.
“It is not easy to the fill the shoes of someone like Andre Russell, who has dominated T20 cricket all over the world and helped West Indies win the ICC T20 World Cup on two occasions. We believe Jason is capable of good performances and we back him to perform at this level and win games as well.”
In recent time, Andre Russell performed well both as a batsman and as a bowler. He won the Most Valuable Player award in IPL 2019. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder was the leading run-scorer and leading wicket-taker of his team in this season.
He scored 510 runs in 13 innings (average 56.66), fifth leading run-scorer of that tournament. The right-arm pacer also took 11 wickets (average 26.09) in IPL 2019.
