New Zealand vs India 2020: KL Rahul Sets a New Record as a Wicketkeeper-Batsman

In Auckland, Indian opener KL Rahul played a match-winning knock for India against New Zealand. He has achieved a unique record as a wicketkeeper-batsman after consecutively scoring half-centuries in T20Is. The Indian opener has now become the first player in the T20I history to score the fifties in his 1st and 2nd T20 as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

As Shikhar Dhawan is dropped from the ongoing series because of injury, Rahul is assigned for the duty of opener with Rohit Sharma. While he is also playing his first T20I series as the wicketkeeper-batsman after impressing with gloves in the ODI series against Australia at home.

In the ODI series against Australia, Rishabh Pant was injured in the first game which gave the chance to Rahul, who also don gloves for King XI Punjab (KXIP) in IPL and Karnataka team. Rahul proved to be a beneficial replacement for Pant. Now, he has become the priority for the job of the wicketkeeping role.

Notably, after scoring 56 and 57* in the first and second T20I match, he has become the first wicket-keeper in T20I history to score the consecutive fifties in the first and second match.

In the first T20I match, Rahul played a brilliant knock, scoring 56 runs off 27 balls at the strike rate of 207.41.

Similarly, on Sunday (26 January), when India lost two crucial wickets of Rohit and Virat Kohli, Rahul took off the pressure from Team India. He set up a vital partnership of 86 runs with Shreyas Iyer(44) to chase a below-par total of 133 runs.

Now, India has the lead of 2-0 in the five-match T20I series against Kiwis. The two teams will head to play the third match at the Seddon Park in Hamilton on Wednesday (29 January).
