Manchester United have been dealt with another blow after their last-minute loss at Arsenal, as their prime target for the summer, Harry Kane is ‘open to’ a contract extension at Tottenham, according to The Athletic’s transfer expert David Ornstein. There has long been a question mark on Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham, following their failure to win a major trophy across the striker’s decade-long spell at the club.

However, what was expected as Kane’s last season at Tottenham, could turn into just another one at the club as he has given a green light to the possibility of a contract extension. At 29, the striker is approaching the twilight years of his prime, and despite racking up over 250 goals at Spurs, he’s yet to win a trophy with them. But it seems his loyalty has once again triumphed over his desire to win taste silverware.

Harry Kane to consider a number of ‘key factors’ ahead of extension talks

It was perceived that Manchester United in a dire need of a prolific striker, and Harry Kane eyeing a Tottenham departure was a perfect coincidence as both were a perfect match for each other. Recent reports had claimed that United manager Erik ten Hag has asked the club to focus on Kane’s signing in the summer, and the Red Devils were ready to follow the instructions as well.

With the England captain entering the last 12 months of his current deal at Spurs at the end of the season, this was club chairman Daniel Levy’s final chance to earn a handsome fee on his most valuable asset after rebuffing a £150m offer from Manchester City in the summer of 2021. This time, Kane was going to be made available at a cut price of £85m as Levy reportedly had accepted his defeat. But this could just not be over as Ornstein in his column for The Athletic has revealed:

“[Harry] Kane has entered the final 18 months of his contract and no negotiations about fresh terms have taken place since August 2021, when a potential switch to Manchester City failed to materialise. Kane’s involvement at the World Cup and Spurs’ focus on the January transfer window has limited the opportunity for talks between the two parties. But conversations are planned for once the winter market shuts and, if the circumstances are right, he is open to signing a new deal.

“How Tottenham’s campaign ends — they remain in the Champions League and FA Cup — as well as their recruitment and prospects of success are sure to be key factors. While the offer to Kane will carry obvious importance, Spurs’ plans and ambitions have always been central to his thinking.

“It is well documented that Kane’s wish would be to win trophies at Tottenham and he is said to be focused on doing that in the coming months rather than leaving. If an agreement cannot be reached soon, Tottenham will need to decide whether they look to sell Kane or let their prized asset go into his last year knowing he could depart for free in 2024.”

United will have to look somewhere else if Harry Kane eventually ends up staying at Tottenham. However, it was not only United that wanted Kane, as German giants Bayern Munich too had openly hinted at a move for the joint England all-time topscorer. But as Ornstein reports, Bayern too would have to fancy other options to replace Robert Lewandowski who left in the summer. It is also being speculated that Spurs boss Antonio Conte’s future too hangs by the hopes of Kane extending his stay at the club beyond 2024.
