On day two (19th October) of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, ten teams featured in five different matches.
In the Group A, Papua New Guinea thrashed Bermuda, while the Netherlands and Scotland claimed easy victories against Namibia and Kenya respectively.
Meanwhile, Jersey claimed a dominating victory in their Group B encounter against Nigeria. In the same group, the hosts UAE beat Ireland.
(Group A)
Norman Vanua’s hat-trick guided Papua Guinea to the 10-wicket victory against Bermuda
Papua New Guinea (PNG) have started their campaign in this tournament in a dominating fashion. It was the match against Bermuda, who lost the toss and only managed to score 89 runs (17.2 overs) before getting all-out in the first innings. PNG pacer Norman Vanua created history after claiming a hat-trick in his first over of this game (third over of that innings). He dismissed Dion Stovell (1), Kamau Leverock (0) and Deunte Darrell (0) in three successive deliveries which put Bermuda in danger as they were battling on 11/5. In the end, only Delray Rawlins (25) reached the 20-run mark in that innings while Vanua had the best bowling figures of 2.2-1-14-3.
PNG chased down that small total easily in 10.2 overs without losing any wicket. Openers Tony Ura (33*) and captain Assad Vala (53*) guided the team to the comfortable victory.
The Netherlands bowlers snatched a victory against Namibia
The Netherlands claimed their second straight victory in this tournament after beating Namibia by 44 runs. After winning the toss, the Netherlands managed the first innings total of 140/6 (20 overs). Middle-order batsman Ryan ten Doeschate (59 runs) played a very important role in that innings.
In reply, the Dutch bowlers bundled out Namibia for just 96 runs (19 overs). Paul van Meekeren (3/16) and Brandon Glover (3/15) both managed to pick up three wickets each. Only Craig Williams (27 runs), Zhivago Groenewald (13 runs) and opener Nikolaas Davin (12 runs) reached the double-digit scores in that innings.
Scotland claimed their first victory after beating Kenya
After suffering a shocking defeat against Singapore in the tournament opener, Scotland claimed their first victory in this tournament after beating Kenya. Scotland scored 170/6 (20 overs) after deciding to bat first. In the last five overs, Scottish batters added 54 runs. Wicketkeeper Matthew Cross (24 off 14 balls) and Tom Sole (33 not out 18 balls) played great cameos in the end.
In reply, Kenya were restricted on 139/8 (20 overs) as Scotland won by 31 runs. Only the opener Irfan Karim (51) and the no.3-positioned batsman Dhiren Gondaria (26) reached the 20-run mark in that innings. Richie Berrington (3/17) bagged three wickets in that innings.
(Group B)
Jersey beat Nigeria by 69 runs after registering their record T20I total
In their opening game of this tournament, Jersey managed their record T20I total and it led them to the big victory. After winning the toss, Jersey scored 184/4 (20 overs). Middle-order batsmen Jonty Jenner (57 not out) and Nick Greenwood (43 runs) played crucial roles in that innings. Their previous highest T20I total was 171/6 (20 overs) against Guernsey at Castel on 1st June 2019.
Chasing down that challenging total, Nigeria were restricted to 115/7 (20 overs). Only the opener Leke Oyede (39 runs) reached the 20-run mark in that innings.
Hosts UAE beat Ireland after Rohan Mustafa’s brilliant all-round performances
Ireland suffered a five-wicket defeat (with 18 balls remaining) against the hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE). After winning the toss, UAE decided to field first. Only the opener Paul Stirling managed to reach the 20-run mark in Ireland’s innings as he scored 72 runs. At the end of 20 overs, Ireland scored 125 runs for the loss of ten wickets. UAE off-spinner Rohan Mustafa had the bowling figures of 4-0-18-4.
In reply, UAE chased down that target in 17 overs after losing five wickets. Once again the opener Rohan Mustafa provided a strong start for the hosts as he scored the highest runs in that innings of 39 runs.
