Sportzwiki Year Review 2016: Top 5 Midfield Pairs In The Premier League

The Premier League is host to some of the best talents in world football which has made it one of the most competitive leagues. The amount of money that is spent on players in transfer windows has seen top quality starts attracted to clubs in the country and the summer transfer window before the current season has seen clubs spend over £1bn on purchases. Some teams made some world record signings while some managed to get players who fit into their styles during the transfer window.

Though there are a number of top class goal scorers in the league who take away all the credit, every once in a while, midfielders around the country stand up and get noticed. It is not a surprise to see a pair of midfielders operated in tandem, helping get the best out of each other and this year has been no different. A number of midfield pairs have taken the league by a storm and here are the 5 best midfield pairs in the Premier League this season:

N Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic (Chelsea):

Playing at the heart of the midfield for the side that is currently at the top of the table, N Golo Kate and Nemanja Matic, have been in sublime form this season. Both players love to sit back and provide cover for the back four which has helped Conte build a solid platform for his attackers and the duo have worked really well together and are a part of the reason for Conte’s success at the club. They have already grown some good understanding between them and are now one of the best midfield pairs in the Premier League this season. Surely, if they can go on, Chelsea are hot favorites for the title.

Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana (Liverpool):

Another midfield pair that has been sizzling this season, Klopp’s English pair of Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson, have been bang in form this season. Henderson, who has made the most number of passes and also had the most touches of the ball in English top flight has been one of their best players while Adam Lallana has helped the side act as a link between the defense and the attack. Henderson loves to sit back and set his side up while Lallana will track back alongside Henderson when needed, ready to break. With contrast styles, the duo have been hard to play this season.

Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba (Manchester United):

Jose Mourinho’s world record signing Paul Pogba, was a shadow oh himself at the start of the season as he was not able to come to grips with his role in the squad. He was not able to effect the game at either ends of the field and looked a waste of money at the start of the season. However, not long after Mourinho decided to use Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera alongside him in the midfield, the French stalwart has turned into a different player. He now has a better understanding of his role at the club and is starting to effect every game this season making this duo one of the most influential in the Premier League.

Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele (Tottenham Hotspur):

Arguably the most balanced midfield pair on this list, Wanyama and Dembele, are two players who are integral to the Spurs’s style of play at the Lane. The former Southampton midfielder likes to drop deep, even between the center halves at times to try and control the tempo of the game but he is not really required to break things up at the other end. He has no creative pressure on him what so ever as all such burden is handled by his Belgian partner Moussa Dembele. A crowd favorite for his ability with the ball, Dembele, likes to create chances in the final third but is disciplined enough to help his back line when needed. Both players have different roles in the squad that complement each other making them an effective pair in the Premier League.

Idrissa Gueye and Gareth Barry (Everton):

Another well balanced midfield pair this time from the Goodison Park is the pairing of Gueye and Barry, two players with different attributes. Barry is an experienced midfielder who knows how to stay ahead of the game most times. He is a regular starter under Ronald Koeman and loves to sit back and help his side defend. On the other hand, Gueye is the powerhouse of the side that allows them to keep the opponents honest and he helps  make Barry’s work and the back lines work easier even in crunch games. Both players know their jobs well and though Everton have not been consistent, this dup has been one of the best in the league.
