The summer transfer window this year has seen a number of new records set for transfers in world football. With more than a billion spent on the transfers, clubs from around the country have managed to get their top transfer targets to help them in their adventure next season.
As many as 13 clubs have broken their club record fees this summer with the world record for football transfers also broken by Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
But not every deal is worth the insane amounts spent this transfer window. So with the deadline day done and dusted, here are 5 overpriced transfers of the summer window of 2016:
Eric Bailly (Villarreal to Manchester United) – £32m:
The first addition to the squad by Mourinho at Old Trafford, Eric Bailly, has settled into his new team with minimal fuzz. He was in decent form for the Spanish outfit in the previous two seasons and attracted interest from the Old Trafford outfit early in the summer.
However, it is now understood that his value was close to the £15 – £20m and that Manchester United may have overpaid up to £20m in an inflated market to get their man. However, his performances this season have almost justified his price already.
Yannick Bolasie (Crystal Palace to Everton) – £30m:
The fan favorite at Selhurst Park, Yannick Bolasie made a record move to Everton as he became the costliest outgoing transfer for Crystal Palace. He made 134 appearance for the Eagles but managed just the 12 goals making him an inconsistent player in the Premier League.
According to the CIES Football Observatory values the Congo international at around the £10m mark making him the second most overpriced transfer in the Premier League this summer.
David Luiz (PSG to Chelsea) – £30m:
The Brazil international who made a £50m move to PSG a couple of years ago, was not even in the frame of the transfer window for Chelsea throughout the two months. However, he was linked to the club on the penultimate day a completed him move on deadline day in a bizarre manner.
However, it is believed that he is well past his best and that Chelsea may have overpaid up to £17m for their man on deadline day.
Marcos Alonso (Fiorentina to Chelsea) – £24m:
Another deadline day signing for Chelsea, Marcos Alonso moved to the Bridge from La Liga after two season away from the Premier League. He was hardly impressive in his stint with Sunderland in the England but his performances in Spain caught Conte’s eye in an inflated market.
Though he made 55 appearances for the La Liga outfit, CIES Football Observatory has revealed that Chelsea may have paid double the valuation of the player to bring him to the club on deadline day.
Granit Xhaka (Borussia Monchengladbach to Arsenal) – £30m:
The first signing of the summer for Arsene Wenger, Granit Xhaka, has had a decent start to his career at the Emirates. He is now the first choice holding midfielder for the Gunners ahead of the likes of Francis Coquelin and Aaron Ramsey and is expected to be an important part of the squad in years to come.
However, he is yet to prove himself at the highest level and it is revealed that Arsenal have paid £9.5m more for his services than his market valuation.
