Team India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been added to India‘s squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against West Indies, according to a PTI report.
He was originally part of only the T20I squad which will start on February 16 in Kolkata but the selectors asked him to join the squad amid the Covid outbreak in the Indian camp. Notable that 7 members in the Indian camp had been tested positive for Covid-19 which included 4 players- Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and net bowler Navdeep Saini.
Ishan Kishan scored the fifties on his both ODI and T20I debuts
Earlier Mayank Agarwal was also called up to join the squad as the Indian team has a shortage of batters in the squad since vice-captain KL Rahul will be available from the 2nd ODI onwards.
Ishan made his ODI debut last year in the Sri Lanka tour when India travelled there with a second-string squad as all the test squad was in England for the 5-match series.
He famously hit the first ball for a six on his ODI debut as he became the first-ever India batsman to score the fifties on both his ODI and T20I debut. But after that series, he didn’t get a chance in the 50-over format though he travelled with the team in South Africa.
As the things stand, Mayank Agarwal is likely to be available for the first ODI as he would complete his 3-day mandatory quarantine before that. So he would open with captain Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli would come into bat at no.3 while Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, and Suryakumar are likely to be slotted for the middle-order.
India faced a tough time in the limited-overs cricket of late as they were whitewashed by 0-3 in South Africa. Earlier they were knocked out from the group stage of the T20 World Cup.
After the West Indies series, India will play a series of 3 T20Is and 2 Tests against Sri Lanka. Post-IPL, they will host a 5-match T20I series against South Africa. The T20 World Cup 2021 is scheduled to take place in Australia at the end of the year.
