Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that Suryakumar Yadav has all the credentials to solve India’s middle-order woes.

In his short career so far he made an impression as he scored 267 runs in 7 matches with an average of 53.4 and his strike rate is also above 100. Similarly in T20Is, he scored 244 runs with a strike rate of 155.41 which included 3 fifties. On Friday India wrapped up the 3-match ODI series against West Indies by a 3-0 margin.

Impressed with his show in international cricket, Sunil Gavaskar called him a late bloomer as he scored tons of runs in domestic cricket before finally getting a chance in India’s colours.

Exactly looks like that. With the form that we have seen in the last couple of years. And sometimes you can say that he has been a late bloomer as far as India is concerned because sometimes it helps you when you have that experience of having played that much domestic cricket for five-six years where you have played under various conditions and against different oppositions.

“And that helps you in international cricket. That step from first-class cricket to international cricket can be a bit too high for a lot of players. And he is bringing all that experience into play,” Sunil Gavaskar spoke to Star Sports.

Gavaskar was in awe of his flick shot for a six. He stated that it wasn’t a bad ball but it’s his ability to dispatch it over the boundary. He lauded his temperament and suggested that he could be a perfect candidate to solve India’s middle-order woes.

“All of us know the capability he has, that flick for a six is an amazing shot. Because the bowler hasn’t bowled a bad ball, it’s just this man has got a great ability to whip the ball for a six. He has got all the shots.

“But in the last couple of games, it has been his temperament that has stood the test. And for me, temperament separates the men from the boys. And it has certainly separated him from the others,” Gavaskar added.

The T20I series between India and West Indies will begin on February 16 in Kolkata Knight Riders.
