As seen at WWE Crown Jewel on Thursday night, WWE Champion Brock Lesnar retained his championship over Cain Velasquez in the opening matchup of the night. He won via the vicious Kimura Lock submission move in just 2 minutes and 3 seconds.
Most of the fans were shocked in this outcome as the man who once knocked out Brock Lesnar in an MMA fight, was able to put up the least resistance against him. Apparently, there’s a big reason why WWE decided to pull off such a finish.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that the idea was always intact to do a short match between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. With Cain’s knee in such a bad shape, WWE creative had to go with such a finish. WarGames match happening at Survivor Series?
It appeared to be a match where almost nothing happened just owing to the fact that WWE had to protect Cain’s bad knee condition. Here’s more to the story from wrestlingINC.com,
“The belief is that Cain needs knee surgery now, but there’s no word yet on when he will have it. It was reported back before he signed with WWE that he would likely undergo the surgery before making any commitment to a pro wrestling company as he was in talks with WWE, AEW, and NJPW.”
Meanwhile, the next matchup for the former UFC Heavyweight Champion is also set for now despite the injury. As informed earlier by the WWE, Cain Velasquez is still scheduled to team up with Rey Mysterio to compete against Andrade and Drew McIntyre at the upcoming live event in Mexico City on Saturday, November 30th.
Cain has recently signed a lucrative, three-year deal with WWE. But his status as a regular performer is up in the air at this point. Also, if he undergoes knee surgery in due course then it is likely to keep him out of action for a long time.
There’s more backstage report is available on the matchup between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. The Observer reported that the original idea was to pit Tyson Fury against Brock Lesnar.
Later WWE was able to sign Cain to a deal and the matchup changed. As a result, Fury made his WWE debut at Crown Jewel with the count-out win over Braun Strowman. But a future match against Brock Lesnar could be in the pipeline as the boxer is open to making a return to the WWE in the near future.
