Shafali Verma And Radha Yadav Signed By WBBL Club Sydney Sixers For WBBL 07

Shafali Verma, a young batting sensation and left-arm spinner Radha Yadav have been snapped up by Sydney Sixers ahead of the upcoming WBBL, the club announced on Monday (September 27). The announcement comes a day after Sydney Thunder confirmed the signings of Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma.

Shafali Verma, India’s youngest debutant in international cricket, put up stunning performances on Australian shores last year at the T20 World Cup and sits on top of the ICC rankings in the format.

Shafali Verma Bags Her Maiden WBBL Deal

At the back of her T20 exploits, the teenager also played for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred recently. On Sunday (September 26), she starred in India’s famous win over Australia with a mature half-century. With her stocks constantly on the rise, Shafali Verma has now bagged her maiden WBBL deal. On Sunday, she scored a maiden ODI half-century with a mature knock of 56 as India upset the mighty Australian team, snapping a 26-game win streak.

“This is a very good opportunity for me and my goal is to just enjoy myself, to make some new friends and have fun,” Verma said. “I want to play WBBL and back myself and just believe in myself.”

Head Coach Ben Sawyer, who worked with Shafali Verma in England in the recently-concluded inaugural season of the Hundred, lavished praises on the youngster labeling her fearless.

“She hits to different areas of the field and plays shots that are different to the other three girls in that top four,” he said. “The experience I had with her in Birmingham was that she wants to learn, she wants to get better and she wants to grow as a player and a person.”

At just 17, Shafali Verma, who in 2019 became India’s youngest ever to play women’s T20 internationals, is widely considered the best batting talent in the world and currently sits atop the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings. Shafali Verma is expected to form a lethal combination with Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, and Ash Gardner at the top of the order for the Sixers, giving the team the most exciting top four in WBBL history.

Radha Yadav Will Be Making Her Maiden WBBL Appearance

Radha Yadav, who is in India’s squad for the upcoming T20Is against Australia, will also be making her maiden appearance in the WBBL.

“Lots of young Indian girls want to play in the WBBL,” Yadav said. “It is a very good standard and I am so happy to be able to play for the Sixers this year.”

Ben Sawyer was delighted with the 21-year-old spinner’s acquisition as well considering the variety she lends to the bowling attack.

“Radha brings a skill set that we have never had at the Sixers and that’s very exciting,” he said. “I think a left-arm ortho bowler is so important in the WBBL and having one who is world-class is such a great opportunity for this team. She has also batted in the middle of the order for India so she is handy with the bat too.”

Not to be overshadowed by her teenage teammate, left-arm orthodox spinner Radha Yadav who is placed 11th on the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings arrives at the Sydney Sixers with an outstanding resume of her own. Now aged 21, Radha Yadav was one of the discoveries of the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20, finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker for India in the tournament, with eight dismissals in five matches.

The Sydney Sixers begin their WBBL 07 campaign in the season opener against the Melbourne Stars on Thursday, October 14 at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.

Australia Names 18-Member Women’s Squad Against New Zealand; Ellyse Perry Doubtful

Cricket Australia has announced 18 women’s squad for the series against New Zealand in September. The two teams will play the three-match ODI series and as many T20I in September. The Australia women’s squad has also the marquee players but the all-rounder Ellyse Perry has been named subject to fitness.

Australia women’s team last played the grand-finale against India in the T20 World Cup 2020. As expected, they stood out as the winner of the tournament, lifting the trophy for the fifth time.

Ellysa Perry, Australia’s lynchpin, suffered from an injury during the tournament. In the semi-final against South Africa, he sustained the hamstring injury after which he was dropped from the playing XI from the finale.

Australia’s National Selector Shawn Flegler informed that Perry is recovering from the injury and would be given a place in the team if gets fit.

“Ellyse is progressing well from a significant hamstring injury and we want to give her every chance to be available for selection, so we’ll continue to monitor her progress over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the pacer Tayla Vlaeminck, who was the part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad earlier this year, has made herself unavailable for the selection. She is recovering from the foot injury and would also miss the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Tayla has had a slight setback in her return from the foot injury she suffered ahead of the T20 World Cup which means she’ll miss this series as well as this season’s rebel WBBL tournament. Our initial plans were to get her back for the 50-over World Cup in New Zealand but now that’s been postponed we’ll take a conservative approach with her and give her as much time as she needs to get her body right without the pressure of a timeframe.

Australia’s women Squad: Meg Lanning (c), Rachael Haynes, Maitlan Brown, Erin Burns, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry (subject to fitness), Megan Schutt, Molly Strano, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, Belinda Vakarewa.

Cricket followers across the world are even captivated by women cricketers like Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry, who were searched 12th and 20th most times thereby being ahead of top Indian cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan.

“While we are not entirely surprised by the results of our study, we are excited nonetheless. Finding that Virat Kohli is the most searched cricketer, and India, the most searched cricket team is unsurprising, what’s surprising is that women cricketers are being searched more often than a lot of top-rated men,” Fernando Angulo, Head of Communications, SEMrush said.

“Our study suggests that stereotypes of cricket as a man only sport no longer hold. There is considerable enthusiasm about women cricketers and women playing cricket. In the future, there are likely to be many more women playing cricket, and India, as the most important cricket playing nation is likely to supply many of them,” he added.

The fact that woman cricketers are being searched more often than some men cricketers is really surprising and there is considerable enthusiasm about women playing cricket which may see more women playing cricket in India.

Ellyse Perry And Matt Toomua End Their Marriage

Star Australian Women’s cricketer Ellyse Perry and Australian rugby union player Matt Toomua have mutually decided to end their marriage. They married in December 2015.

On Sunday (26th July), Ellyse Perry and Matt Toomua released a joint statement to announce their separation.

The release claimed, “It’s with the greatest of respect for one another that we decided to separate earlier this year. We felt this was the right course of action and is in the best interests of each other and our current lives. This is something that has evolved and is a mutual decision. Throughout our relationship, we have remained private and we ask that our space and privacy continue to be respected during this difficult time for both of us.”

Early in this year, there was a rumour about their separation. It started when Perry was present in the Australian Cricket Awards 2020 in Melbourne without wearing her wedding ring. During that award ceremony, she won the Belinda Clark Award (Australia’s best women’s international cricketer) for the third time. However, in that award-winning speech, Perry didn’t take the name of Toomua. But they had earlier denied about their separation.

Ellyse Perry last time played in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020

Before the coronavirus pandemic forced to spoil the international cricket, Ellyse Perry, who was also a former Australia women’s national soccer team player, featured in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in last February-March. As Australia hosted that tournament for the first time, it was obviously special for the Australian women’s cricketers.

While Australia Women’s won that tournament after thrashing the India Women’s in the final by 85 runs, Perry completely missed out the knockout stages of that tournament due to hamstring injury. She featured in four matches of that tournament where she scored 26 runs (average 13.00) and managed to pick up the only wicket.

On the other hand, Matt Toomua is currently serving for Melbourne Rebels in the Australian rugby union. Last Friday (24th July), he played a vital role in his team’s victory against the New South Wales Waratahs (29-10) at SCG.
