Can’t Describe Shoaib Akhtar In One Word, He’s A Whole Book – Shahid Afridi Reacts To A Fan’s Question

Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistan captain has shared the dressing room with speedster Shoaib Akhtar for a large part of his career.

Shoaib Akhtar, widely considered as one of the most lethal fast bowlers in cricket history, represented Pakistan in 46 in a 14-year long international career. Known for his incredible pace, Shoaib Akhtar also holds the international record for the fastest delivery against New Zealand in 2002.

Shahid Afridi Reckons One Can’t Describe Shoaib Akhtar In One Word As He’s A Whole Book

So, when a fan asked Shahid Afridi to describe Shoaib Akhtar in one word, the former Pakistan skipper was a little perplexed, saying that Shoaib Akhtar is a “whole book.”

“You can’t describe him in one word, he is a whole book!” Afridi said.

“I’ve played across eras, I’ve seen many fast bowlers, but Shoaib Akhtar’s strength, his bravery has wrecked the batsmen over. The batsmen used to be under so much pressure while facing him.”

However, Shahid Afridi then called the former Pakistan pacer a “match-winner.”

“He was a match-winner and he has achieved great things for Pakistan,” the former Pakistan captain said.

Both, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar began their international careers within a year of each other (Shahid Afridi made his debut in 1996) and remained an integral part of the side for many years. The batter announced his retirement from international cricket in 2018 but continues to appear in league cricket, having last played in the 2022 edition of the Pakistan Super League.

Shahid Afridi Was Forced To Leave PSL 2022 Early Due To Injury; Shoaib Akhtar Advised Him To Take Rest

However, Shahid Afridi was forced to leave the PSL season early this year due to an injury. Interestingly, Akhtar had funnily commented on the former Pakistan captain’s age when Shahid Afridi confirmed his departure from the PSL.  Shahid Afridi had earlier said that this edition of the league would be his last appearance in the tournament.

Shahid Afridi decided to retire from international cricket in 2018, but did play the T20 leagues after that and was part of the recently concluded PSL 2022 season which turned out to be his last as he had announced earlier. At 42 years of age, the all-rounder had to pull out the midway of the tournament citing injury concerns and Shoaib Akhtar reacted by stating him to take a rest.

Quetta Gladiators is Shahid Afridi’s fourth PSL franchise. He has also played for Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi. Shahid Afridi took 47 wickets at an average of 26.51 in his PSL career, besides scoring 459 runs at a strike rate of 150.8.

Shoaib Akhtar, popularly known as Rawalpindi Express, has clocked the fastest delivery in the world at 161.3 kmph and the record is yet to be broken as well. The right-arm quick played 46 Tests, 163 ODIs and 15 T20Is for Pakistan from the period of 1997 to 2011 and claimed 444 wickets from 224 matches across all formats during his 14 years of an international career.

Shoaib Akhtar was undoubtedly one of the fastest bowlers in international cricket and his 178 Test wickets and 247 ODI scalps are a testament to what he achieved when he was in his prime form. Shoaib Akhtar played three matches recently for Asia Lions under Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy in the Legends League Cricket and picked two wickets as they ended runners-up to World Giants, who won by 25 runs in the final.

Shoaib Akhtar Reveals Sachin Tendulkar Told Him “Your Delivery Broke My Ribs”

Shoaib Akhtar recalled how one of his pacey deliveries ended up hurting Sachin Tendulkar and broke his ribs, during Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007, in the ODI series.

There are near-endless tales surrounding Sachin Tendulkar, Shoaib Akhtar and their numerous battles and face-offs on the cricket field. Be it in the Kolkata Test in 1997, the India high-voltage India-Pakistan World Cup match in 2003 or the Faisalabad Test in 2006, every time Shoaib Akhtar has bowled to Sachin Tendulkar, it has made for some fascinating viewing.

Shoaib Akhtar Recalled How One Of His Deliveries Hit Legendary Batman Sachin Tendukar And Broke His Ribs

In a recent chat during the Legends Cricket League, Shoaib Akhtar sat down and recalled an incident related to the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar. During Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007, during the ODI series, Shoaib Akhtar recalled how one of his pacey deliveries ended up hurting Sachin Tendulkar and broke his ribs. The extent of the damage was so much that Sachin Tendulkar had trouble breathing, revealed the master blaster.

“It always feels good sharing stories. Like I and Sachin… Sachin is a very good cook. He once told me I want to cook something for you so you come over sometime.

“So I went to his million dollar home and we ate and we then shared stories. He told me ‘In Guwahati, one of your deliveries hit me and it broke my ribs’,” Akhtar said in a video shared by sports presenter Shonali Nagrani on her Instagram handle.

“Sachin then said ‘I didn’t tell it to anybody. Sourav kept telling me… ‘Sachin keep at it. Do not move. But I couldn’t say anything because I could not breathe.’

“He told me he spent the night in the hospital. When I asked him why he didn’t tell me, he said ‘if I were to tell you, wouldn’t I have received a few more lethal balls from you’,” added Akhtar.

The pacer featured in the headlines across the world for bowling a delivery at 161.3 km/h (100.23 mph), in an ODI against England during the 2003 World Cup. Shoaib Akhtar was fondly nicknamed the “Rawalpindi Express” for his speed. He was also the first bowler to be recorded bowling at 100 miles per hour and did so twice during his career.

Shoaib Akhtar was undoubtedly one of the fastest bowlers in international cricket and his 178 Test wickets and 247 ODI scalps are a testament to what he achieved when he was in his prime form.

Sachin Tendulkar Recalls Being Hit In His Rib Cage During India-Pakistan Match In 2007 Off Shoaib Akhtar

Sachin Tendulkar, who was no stranger to injuries during his long career, had himself spoken about this incident during a session on Unacademy last year.

“I got hit in my rib cage in 2007. We were playing Pakistan in India and in the first over itself I got hit in the rib cage off a Shoaib Akhtar ball. It was quite painful.

“For a month and a half or two months, I was not able to cough or sleep on my tummy. But I continued playing like that and had designed my own chest guard. I played the remaining four ODIs and the Test series,” Tendulkar said during a session on Unacademy.

Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record for most hundreds in both Tests and ODIs. Incredibly, he retained a divine enthusiasm for the game till his last match. He also scored the first double-century in one-day cricket. In 2012, he became the first player to score 100 international centuries.

Later that year, though, he announced his retirement from ODIs. And on November 16, 2013, Sachin Tendulkar retired from Test cricket after a memorable 200th Test-the most by any player. Last month, Shoaib Akhtar participated in the Legends League Cricket and picked a couple of wickets for Asia Lions in three matches.

Misbah-ul-Haq Recalls A Funny Moment From A Test Against Sri Lanka And Opens Up On Miscalculating A Shot In 2007 T20I World Cup Final

Misbah-ul-Haq, who is currently playing in the Legends League Cricket 2022, recently shared a funny incident from a Test against Sri Lanka.

The 47-year-old batsman, who represented Pakistan in 75 Tests, has been part of many historic wins. Speaking on the sidelines of the tournament for the retired cricketers, Misbah-ul-Haq shared an encounter with him and former Sri Lanka captains Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Misbah-ul-Haq Recalls Funny Moment From A Sri Lanka Test

The 47-year-old Misba-ul-Haq shared the encounter where the iconic Sri Lankan duo questioned him for taking “a little bit more time” at the crease while taking guard.

In a video uploaded by the organizers, Misbah-ul-Haq said: “I remember a Test match against Sri Lanka and I was batting. I was taking a little bit more time in the crease to settle down and [Kumar] Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were at me from behind, saying what’s happening man, why are you taking that much time.”

He added: “I just turned around and said I was just taking guard and I started trolling them, saying your openers take 10 second before facing a ball even when the bowlers are ready. The other opener used to check every cricket gear and then kissed the bat before taking guard. That was a funny moment and they were just laughing hiding their faces behind their hands.”

Misbah-ul-Haq has accumulated 5222 runs at an average of 46.62, including 10 centuries and 39 fifties. He has led Pakistan in 56 games, winning 26 of those while 11 ended in a draw.

Misbah-ul-Haq Got Overconfident And Mistimed The Shot As India Won Inaugural T20I World Cup In 2007

The former Pakistan cricketer was an integral member of the middle-order during his playing days. While he won innumerable games for his side, leaving the T20 World Cup at the Wanderers in 2007 against arch-rivals India still haunts him.

Throwing light on the same during a chat with Shoaib Akhtar, Misbah-ul-Haq said: “In 2007, I always say that throughout every game, I scored so many fours playing that shot. Even with the fine leg in place, I was taking singles while playing that shot against Australia. Against spinners, I used to beat fine leg with that shot.”

He added: “So, you can say I got overconfident. I mistimed the shot on which I had the most confidence.”

Speaking on the historic game, Mishbah-ul-Haq kept Pakistan in the hunt after they were reduced to 77/6 in 12 overs in pursuit of 153 runs. He took the game deep to bring the equation to 13 runs off the last over. He struck a massive six off Joginder Sharma before scooping one to S Sreesanth positioned at fine-leg to leave the game in the ground.

Misbah-ul-Haq, having almost single-handedly kept Pakistan alive in the final in the later stages of the match, tried to scoop a Joginder Sharma delivery over the fine leg with six runs needed, only to be caught by S Sreesanth.

Misbah-ul-Haq’s scoop shot off Indian pacer Joginder Sharma that landed safely in the palms of S Sreesanth to seal victory for India in the final of the inaugural 2007 T20I World Cup is a memory not many Indian cricket fans will be able to forget. Misbah-ul-Haq said that he got overconfident about the shot, having used it to his benefit throughout the tournament.

Gautam Gambhir Is A Good Friend: Kamran Akmal Opens Up On 2010 Asia Cup Clash

Kamran Akmal, a veteran Pakistan wicketkeeper who famously clashed with ex-Indian star Gautam Gambhir during the Asia Cup in 2010, claims to have a healthy relationship with Gambhir. India had gone on to win the match by three wickets. Gautam Gambhir also top-scored for his side with a knock of 83 runs. India eventually won the trophy, defeating Sri Lanka in the final by 81 runs.

In a video shared by Legends League Cricket on their social media handles, Kamran Akmal revealed that his on-field altercation with Gautam Gambhir was due to a misunderstanding. He added that the two share a healthy relationship, having played together in a number of ‘A’ matches. Kamran Akmal also stated that there is no such rivalry with Ishant Sharma, either.

Kamran Akmal Admits Things Heated Up A Bit With Gautam Gambhir In 2010 Asia cup And There’s No Rivalry With Pacer Ishant Sharma Too

Ishant Sharma and Kamran Akmal were also involved in a heated debate during a T20I fixture between India and Pakistan in 2012-13 in Bangalore. However, the Pakistani gloveman clarified that he shares a good rapport with the Indian players.

Kamran said: “Things heated up a bit with Gautam Gambhir during the 2010 Asia Cup but it was all due to misunderstandings. He is a very good friend. We have played a lot of ‘A’ cricket together. There is no such rivalry with Ishant Sharma too.”

Kamran Akmal was a regular part of the Pakistan side that clashed with the Indian team on a regular basis in the first decade of the 21st century. His career witnessed several on-field bust-ups with Indian players. He also had a similar exchange with pacer Ishant Sharma in a T20 International at Bengaluru back in 2012-13.

Kamran Akmal, who featured in 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is, last played for Pakistan in 2017 in the white-ball formats.

Kamran Akmal represented Pakistan in 53 Tests and 157 ODIs, registering 2,648 and 3,236 runs respectively. He also played in 58 T20Is, scoring 987 runs.

Kamran Akmal Who Played For Asia Lions In Legends Cricket League 2022 Will Ply His Trade For Peshawar Zalmi In PSL 2022

Kamran Akmal was recently seen in action in the ongoing Legends League Cricket 2022. He was part of the Asia Lions side. The 40-year-old will now ply his trade for Peshawar Zalmi in the latest edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2022).

The wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out of Peshawar Zalmi’s opening fixture of PSL 2022. The franchise’s team management recently confirmed that the keeper will now resume practice with the rest of the squad after having completed his mandatory isolation period.

Peshawar Zalmi is scheduled to take on Islamabad United in the fifth match of the season at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday, January 30. They are currently placed second in the PSL 2022 points table.

Kamran Akmal last year had withdrawn from the 2022 PSL edition after protesting his relegation to the silver category during the players draft. The second-highest run-getter in PSL history, the former Pakistan keeper had said on his YouTube channel that he didn’t want to play for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 7. But the Peshawar franchise ironed out the differences to avail Kamran Akmal’s services for the season.

Kamran Akmal’s PSL record carries significance as he has 1820 runs from 69 games, the run tally second only to Babar Azam’s 2070 from 58 games. The keeper has scored his runs at a strike rate of 136.84 and is the only one to have scored three hundreds.

Darren Sammy Reckons Kieron Pollard-led West Indies Should Fancy Their Chances Against India In ODI Series

Darren Sammy, two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain on Saturday gave his verdict on West Indies’ chance in the limited-overs series against India which will begin with the three-match ODI contest in Ahmedabad starting February 6.

Speaking on the sidelines of Legends League Cricket in Muscat, Darren Sammy opined that it will not be a cakewalk for the Indian team in the ODI and T20I series and hence the Kieron Pollard-led side should “fancy their chances”.

Darren Sammy Believes West Indies Skipper Kieron Pollard Will Definitely Fancy His Chances Against India

West Indies have fallen back to some of their tried and tested players for the India limited-overs series. Fast bowler Kemar Roach has been recalled to the ODI squad and Darren Sammy feels the pacer will be key to giving breakthroughs with the new ball. The 33-year-old Kemar Roach last played an ODI game for the West Indies against India at the Queen’s Park Oval in August 2019.

“We need bowlers who can take wickets in both the ODI and T20 series. Kemar is a quality bowler. We all know his records in Test cricket. He gets wickets with the new ball. When you play against quality guys, especially in India, you need guys to get breakthroughs with the new ball.

“If not, you could find chasing 300-plus especially on good Indian wickets. So I could understand the selection process behind it,” Darren Sammy said hailing the Desmond Haynes-led selection committee’s decision.

Kieron Pollard is one of the most experienced players in the West Indies side and he has been regularly playing IPL in India for Mumbai Indians. Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has opined that Kieron Pollard’s experience of playing in India will be helpful for the team.

“I believe Pollard will definitely fancy his chances (against India). He has been playing in India for so long, he knows the conditions well. At the (ongoing) England series, we have unearthed some new talents. I think West Indies could go out there (India) and do well,” said the former West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

After a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign in 2021, that marked the end of an era for West Indies cricket, the team was whitewashed by Pakistan in a limited-overs contest before suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Ireland in ODIs. However, they bounced back strongly to take a 2-1 lead in the ongoing five-match series against England at home.

West Indies won the first game of the series by a massive margin of 9 wickets with 17 balls remaining. However, England bounced back to win the second T20I by 1 run. West Indies then registered a 20-run win in the third match to take a lead in the series.

Darren Sammy: India Have Been Strong At Home And Is A Force To Reckon With

India, on the other side, will head to the contest on the back of a forgettable tour of South Africa where they lost the Test series 2-1 and were whitewashed 3-0 in the ODIs.

When asked if the series defeat would hand West Indies the advantage in the contest, Darren Sammy said, “India have always been strong at home, they are a force to reckon with because of some really good one-day players.”

The ODI series will begin on February 6, with all the matches scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The three-match T20I series, meanwhile, will be played in Kolkata, with matches beginning on February 16.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Friday denied reports of a rift within the Senior Men’s team over discord between team captain Kieron Pollard and other members of the side. The clarification comes hours after a voice note circulated on social media and in sections of the regional broadcast media about the alleged rift between Kieron Pollard and other players.

FULL SQUAD For ODIs: Kieron Pollard (C), Fabian Allen, Nkrumah Bonner, Darren, Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Kemar Roach, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Hayden Walsh Jr.

Kevin Pietersen had an epic response to Shreevats Goswami’s tweet.

“I’d be too expensive and would probably end up being the top scorer in the league. It would embarrass all the modern day players!” tweeted the former England captain in his reply.

Indian wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami, who shared a dressing room with Kevin Pietersen during the initial part of the IPL, asked him to return to the tournament. The Enland cricketer replied to his comment saying that he would be too expensive, and also would end up being the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Kevin Pietersen played for a range of franchises in the IPL after starting his career with RCB in 2009. Overall, he scored 1001 runs in 36 IPL matches at an average of 37.07 and a strike rate of 134.72. He hit four half-centuries and one century in his IPL career.

Notably, Kevin Pietersen, who retired from cricket in the year 2018, had played for five Indian Premier League teams in his career, he represented Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Rising Pune Supergiants, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kevin Pietersen Smashed 7 Sixes And 9 Fours In His 38 Ball 86

During the game, the maverick right-hander rolled back the clock with some breathtaking strokes that once terrorised even the best of the bowlers across the globe. Opening the batting with former South Africa star Herschelle Gibbs, Kevin Pietersen smashed seven sixes and nine fours, scoring at a strike rate of 226.32.

Kevin Pietersen, who attacked all the Asia Lions bowlers, was particularly severe against Asghar Afghan, hitting the former Afghanistan all-rounder for two sixes and as many fours in an over. By the time he was dismissed by the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, the World Giants had already scored 128 in 10.4 overs. Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien then took over the mantle and scored an unbeaten 31 off 24 balls to see the World Giants home.

The World Giants won three out of four games and finished in the first position in the points table. The Asia Lions took the second position with two wins in four games while India Maharajas were eliminated.
