Ravichandran Ashwin Set To Play Vijay Hazare Trophy Semi-Final In Less Than 24 Hours Of Ranchi Test

The 33-year-old off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had a successful series in the recently concluded three-match home Test series against South Africa. After completing the whitewash in this Test series, Ashwin is now getting ready for the domestic cricket. Ashwin will now serve Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20 semi-final. In fact, he will begin this semi-final journey in less than 24 hours of the conclusion of Ranchi Test.

The recently concluded home Test series against South Africa was Ashwin’s first Test series in 2019. Before this Test series, Ashwin last played for the national team in last December during the Adelaide Test. In that period, Ashwin was struggling with his fitness and also was inconsistent with the ball.

In this year, Ashwin featured in the English County Championship Division One where he served in Nottinghamshire. Though his team totally disappointed in that tournament as they relegated to Division Two, Ashwin performed remarkably well. He played only five matches but took 34 wickets and finished as the second most wicket-taker for his team. Ashwin gained massive confidence from that tournament.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker in the Freedom Trophy 2019/20

Finally, he earned a spot in the Test playing XI during the Visakhapatnam Test, the opening Test against South Africa. While the other bowlers were struggling to pick up wickets during South Africa’s first innings, Ashwin bagged seven wickets in that innings. He finished that Test after picking up a total of eight wickets.

In the second Test at Pune, Ashwin took four and two wickets respectively. He was wicketless during South Africa’s first innings in the recently concluded Ranchi Test but managed to claim one wicket during the visitors’ following-on innings.

Despite not taking many wickets in the Ranchi Test, Ashwin finished this Test series as the leading wicket-taker. The Indian off-spinner scalped 15 wickets in three matches of this series with an average of 25.26.

The series finished early on Tuesday (22nd October), while Wednesday (23rd October) would be the fifth or final day of the Ranchi Test.

However, Ashwin is not in the resting mood. While he got an off-day, he wants to utilise it for his domestic side Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu will play against Gujarat in the semi-final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20.

Through his official Twitter account, Ashwin has announced his upcoming plan.

He posted, “Freedom series done and dusted, off to Bengaluru now for the #VijayHazareTrophy. Stay committed to the course and the course will stay with you. ☺️”

Meanwhile, another Indian Test member, Mayank Agarwal will also feature in the semi-final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20. On Wednesday, while Karnataka will face Chhattisgarh in the other semi-final, Agarwal will play for his domestic side Karnataka.

Rohit Sharma Takes A Dig At The Media After Smashing A Double Century

In the ongoing home Test series against South Africa, Rohit Sharma is in a great form with the bat as a Test opener. After scoring his maiden Test double-century, Rohit took a dig at the media.

Before the ongoing home Test series, Indian limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was struggling to enter in the playing XI in Test cricket. He was not consistent in Test cricket, where he generally batted at the middle-order before this series.

Meanwhile, the team management was not finding the proper opening partners in Test cricket. As Rohit is very much experienced and hugely successful as a limited-overs opening batsman, the selectors decided to observe him as a Test opener in the ongoing home Test series. Before this Test series, he never played as a Test opener.

Many former cricketers supported this experiment. However, some have come out with their doubts as they believe that Test cricket and limited-overs cricket are totally different.

Finally, Rohit played as an opening batsman in the first Test of the ongoing three-match Test series against South Africa. In that Test match at Visakhapatnam, Rohit scored 176 and 127 runs.

He failed to achieve success in the Pune Test where he scored 14 runs in the first innings. However, he has crushed many doubts with his brilliant knock in the ongoing Ranchi Test.

After winning the toss in this Ranchi Test, India decided to bat first and went down to 39/3. However, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane handled that pressure situation superbly. Later, in that innings, Rohit completed his maiden double century in Test career. Finally, he lost his wicket after scoring 212 runs. He and Rahane (115 runs) played very crucial roles for the hosts who settled the first innings total of 497/9 decl.

Wanted to use the opportunity to full: In-form Rohit Sharma

In the ongoing Test series, Rohit has already scored 529 runs in four innings with a superb average of 132.25. After the first innings in Ranchi Test, Rohit has become the fourth most run-scorer as an Indian batsman in the three-match Test series.

At the end of day two of Ranchi Test, Rohit took a dig the media.

Rohit said, “Wanted to use the opportunity to full. Otherwise a lot would have been said and written (about my Test career). You folks write a lot about me. Now you will write some good things I hope.”

While it was the first Test double-century for Rohit, it was also his sixth Test century. He feels that it was the most challenging knock in his Test career.

India are already leading the three-match Test series by 2-0. They are now busy to register another victory in the ongoing Ranchi Test. At the stumps on day two of this Test match, South Africa were struggling on 9/2.
