Cody Rhodes received a heroic ovation after his match against Seth Rollins at WWE Hell in a Cell PLE. He not only competed in it with a serious injury but also ended up winning the match with it. The top WWE Raw superstar was dealing with a torn pectoral tendon but that didn’t prohibit him from delivering a five-star main event match at the June PLE.
Cody Rhodes then had his pectoral muscle repaired with surgery and he is on the road to recovery. Per WWE’s update, he could be out for almost nine months but there’s a chance that he could return before his expected time. If that happens then a monumental return could be in store for him, down the road similar to WWE Hall of Famer Triple H.

In a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer mentioned that Cody is currently scheduled to be away from WWE programming for 9 months, but many expect that the timeframe would be lesser. Meltzer noted that next January’s Royal Rumble is being eyed as a potential return date for the American Nightmare.

WWE eyeing Royal Rumble 2023 for Cody Rhodes’s return
In that case, the show can be built around the return of Cody Rhodes. The Newsletter noted how that WWE filmed the second-generation superstar’s surgery, and will likely use it in future promotional packages, possibly in time for Royal Rumble 2023 as they’ve previously done for injured top WWE superstars.
Meltzer also noted that current thoughts are to give Cody Rhodes the similar promotion that the WWE gave to Triple H in 2002. The Cerebral Assassin suffered a torn quadricep in a tag title match, the earlier summer but he fought through the injury to complete the tag team match alongside Steve Austin against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit.
Triple H’s return was hyped up with numerous vignettes and it finally happened on a January 2002 episode of Monday Night Raw that took place at the Madison Square Garden. That moment is still considered to be one of the loudest pops in the history of the WWE. Triple H also went on to win the Royal Rumble and then defeat Chris Jericho for the then-WWF Undisputed Championship at WrestleMania X8.
Somewhat similar could be planned for Cody Rhodes once he returns as reports also claim that perhaps he may end up facing Roman Reigns in the main event of Wrestlemania 39 in case The Rock remains unavailable.
