On last week’s episode of WWE Smackdown Live, it was announced that Dolph Ziggler will be returning on the show after a hiatus of seven weeks. He was gone claiming that he deserves a lot better than the United States Championship and hence did not hesitate to vacate the title after the Clash of Champions PPV.

Some of the fans did think that WWE creative team downplayed his comeback by inserting him into a random singles contest.

Baron Corbin was confirmed to be his opponent against whom he had several matches, prior to this. But, a further announcement from Shane McMahon on Twitter changed the entire complexion of the contest.

According to the Smackdown commissioner’s confirmation, the match was made a number one contender’s match for the WWE Championship. It means that the winner of this contest would get a shot to the title at the Fastlane PPV.

Earlier, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn made this contest a triple threat match which is why last night’s match made it a fatal-4-way showdown at the brand-exclusive PPV.

However, the scheduled match never happened due to Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn attacking both of them prior to the beginning of WWE Smackdown Live.

Corbin was ambushed by the duo at the backstage area while making his entrance. He tried hard to come back retaliating but the number games caught up with him.

Later, Dolph Ziggler too suffered the same consequence at the hands of the heels. This disqualified the opening contest and forced Shane McMahon to book two separate matches with the winners advancing to Fastlane main event. Kevin Owens vs. Baron Corbin and Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler were these two contests.

Both the matches turned out to be extremely physical contests. Baron Corbin connected with his End of Days after countering a super-kick from Owens.

Later, in the main event, Dolph Ziggler managed to deliver his pendant superkick even after getting should-first into the ring post to pull off the victory.

This made the Fastlane WWE Championship match a fatal-5-way featuring the WWE Champion, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin.
