On this past February 19, WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. As expected, he came up short to his quest of becoming the world champion and headed into Wrestlemania 38 for a bitter rival against Brock Lesnar. It appears that this match at the Elimination Chamber 2022 event could be the final match of his wrestling career.

Goldberg had arrived in Saudi Arabia for Elimination Chamber 2022 and was the first man to hit the gym right after the long 13-hour flight. Previous reports already stated how this bygone match would have been his final match of the contract.

Then in an Instagram video, the legendary name spoke about how his match with Reigns may be his last in the company. “I’ve got a job to do and it could be my last in a WWE ring,” Goldberg said. “Possibly my final mission in the wrestling world… Kind of a bittersweet trip as it may be my last here as a performer.”

That being said, Goldberg has finally become a free agent in the professional wrestling world after almost four years. He originally returned in 2016 for a program with Brock Lesnar. But then WWE re-signed him in 2018 for some more matches.

That deal with WWE was about to run through 2023 and called for two matches per year. In 2021, Goldberg lost to then-WWE Champion Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble in January and then lost again to then-WWE Champion Bobby Lashley at SummerSlam in August. But he did seek redemption by defeating Lashley at Crown Jewel 2021. Only one outing was left for him, thereafter which was done at Elimination Chamber.

When Goldberg vs. Lashley in the No Holds Barred Falls Count Anywhere match was announced for the 2021 Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia, there were speculations about some changes to his WWE contract but that may haven’t happened.

As admitted by The Myth himself, he will undergo shoulder surgery in the future that should keep him out of action for some time. But he has stated in the past that he would be open to working with WWE in the future in an interview with Sports Illustrated,

“I’m focused on what’s next,” Goldberg responded. “If they want to come back to me with something, we’ll talk. You never know what the future holds.”
