WWE News: John Cena Did Not Believe in a Career Vs Title Storyline

In recent times, former WWE writer Jimmy Jacobs was interviewed by Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated. He was a renowned storyline creator in the WWE for a quite a few years before parting ways with the company. He was asked about various topics including one of the biggest angles of 2016 between Dolph Ziggler and The Miz.

These two had some feuds in their career on both Raw and Smackdown, before this. Being billed from the same city, they were accustomed to their wrestling to a certain extent before entering the WWE scene. So, many of the fans believed the storyline would sound repeated. But, in reality, it turned out to be one of the best of 2016 which also produced a match of the year candidate at last year’s No Mercy PPV.

The Miz was having his fifth run with the Intercontinental title on Smackdown Live with wife Maryse by her side when the feud with Ziggler began. Since the show-off was having a tough time on the show, The Miz convinced him to put his career on the line in a title match at No Mercy.

The idea played so well with Ziggler’s buddies the Spirit Squad back on the show and putting up all the resistance before him. It brought out the best out of Dolph Ziggler. But, just like the others, John Cena did not believe in the potential of this storyline.

Jacobs revealed the franchise player always liked his stories, but after getting to know to this particular angle, he quoted,

‘We’re in a yay-boo business. You’ve got to leave them with either cheering Dolph Ziggler or booing The Miz.’’

But, later, John Cena watched the feud from Gorilla position and understood the audience connected with the angle, instantly. So, Cena admitted that he ‘felt’ the segment. Check out further statements from Jacobs,

“John watched from ‘Gorilla’. Afterwards, he said, ‘I was sceptical of that, but that was a home run. I really felt that.’ I was really proud of that.”

That rivalry earned Dolph Ziggler his sixth Intercontinental Championship on Smackdown Live. In fact, it was the last interesting angle that he was involved in. For now, he is thinking of a career evaluation on the blue brand.
