WWE News: Impact Wrestling Tried To Sign Jerry Lawler

Jerry Lawler is one of the most familiar names on WWE television. He has been associated with the WWE for over three decades. He tried in the company in his earlier days by performing inside the ring. Once his stint came to an end, the company brought him to the commentary position which continued till 2016. He is one of those rarest names who has been present on Raw from the very beginning till last year.

Following the brand split, last year, WWE tried to make some changes on the commentary desk to bring some fresh faces to it. Hence, he was moved to Smackdown Live momentarily before again moving to the pre-show panels. His job was to discuss the Raw, Smackdown and PPV events before they went on air.

But in December 2016, WWE wanted to go for a cost-cutting and hence removed Jerry Lawler and Lita from the panel. This was the time when a long bond came to an end starting the speculations that the WWE Hall of Famer might sign a full-time deal with a rival promotion.

So, quite expectedly, the veteran commentator revealed the same on his podcast, Dinner with the King. He stated that following his removal from the pre-show panels, TNA tried to sign him for a full-time role. The creative head, Jeff Jarrett called him asking him about his status and whether he is willing to sign with the TNA brand.
Check out Lawler’s exact comments here:

“I did get a call from Jeff Jarrett just saying, ‘Hey, we [TNA] were just wondering if you re-signed with the WWE or not?’ It was one of those things that I got right back to him and said I did re-sign with them [WWE].”

It was also revealed that the company also wanted to reunite the iconic duo of Jerry and Jim Ross for their commentary desk. Jerry further commented,

“Without a doubt, I’m sure that’s what was in their minds and it was possibly in the mind of JR’s as well.”

However, the scenario has never come to fruition, and both Jerry and JR are currently under a WWE deal where they get to appear on some special occasions and call the marquee matches. There are no chances of seeing them on weekly episodes, but they will continue their stint by appearing on the PPVs.
