WWE News: Winner of Mae Young Classic Will be Crowned with NXT Women’s Championship

As reported earlier, Asuka has now become the former NXT Women’s Champion. She was forced to relinquish her title due to an injury. At NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III event, she featured in a match against Ember Moon for the title. After an incredible game, the champ was able to make her opponent tap out in her devastating submission move. She came out of Brooklyn as the reigning champion by it.
But, the doctors checked her immediately after the match and confirmed that she is suffering from a concussion. The Empress of Tomorrow was later checked up, and we received an update via WWE.com that she has picked up the injury in her collarbone. It takes at least four to eight weeks to get healed up which means that she will not be able to perform for that time span.
Once this was announced, it was inevitable that Asuka would have to vacate her title. In the recent taping of NXT, she handed over the championship she held for over 500 days to the NXT GM, William Regal in the presence of Triple H. She also bade goodbye to the developmental territory, as well.
With that being said, it is evident that we certainly need a name on NXT who could possess the vacant title. But, there was no creative planning reserved for this situation since Asuka was supposed to continue her reign for an even longer period. As for now, due to lack of proper names to become champion, the officials have started thinking to take help of the Mae Young Classic tournament.
As reported by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, there are talks ongoing among the creative heads who are willing to make the winner of the Mae Young Classic, the NXT Women’s Championship, as well. As reported earlier, the WWE will award the winner with a belt. Apparently, this might turn out to be the belt that was possessed by Asuka for a long time.
It is not a confirmed news since the plans can change at any point. We have to wait for further reports regarding this. But, if this happens then the winner is bound to get a WWE contract which is a lifetime opportunity for her that can change his career. The finale is slated to take place on September 12th on the WWE Network.
