AJ Styles has been the WWE Champion since November 2017. He has broken many records during this title reign. He had already surpassed 300-day landmark that makes him the longest reigning champion in the last five years. There’s no doubt about the run being a phenomenal one.
The championship reign continued in a time when his former contemporary was absent from WWE Raw. Brock Lesnar is the concerned name who barely made appearances in the entire year. On the other hand, AJ Styles was proving his potential as the WWE title-holder by competing on a daily basis on Smackdown.
It is why the fans respect this man a hell lot. He worked around the globe to prove his work ethic. That has not changed a bit after arriving in the biggest pro-wrestling promotion in the world. It will not be a wrong statement if we call him the most valuable champion in the current WWE locker room.
The ‘face that runs the place’ was present in the San Diego Comic-Con, recently. An interviewer asked him about his idea of what he thinks about Brock Lesnar and his absence throughout the championship reign. He was not happy about this and blamed it on the officials.
As a true veteran sportsman, AJ Styles brought a storyline perspective into the context. He took the name of Kurt Angle and other officials from WWE Raw for allowing Lesnar off from the show during the title reign. Check out his comments in this regard, (courtesy prowrestling.com),
“People they come to see Brock Lesnar and the fact that he hasn’t defended in a while, that’s on WWE. That’s on Kurt Angle and everybody else who has anything to do with it. I do what I do. I’m a fighting Champion like you said, I’m gonna defend my Championship, I’m gonna give the Championship the respect it deserves.”
AJ Styles also mentioned Brock Lesnar as a big draw in the company. The host also asked him about whether he is thinking of breaking CM Punk’s record of 434-day reign with the championship. In reply, he asserted on retaining the championships on a daily basis rather than creating a new record. Here’s his reply,
“Not really. I just have my sights set on retaining the Championship. The guys I’m going up against are freaking amazing, so Rusev, guys coming back, Randy Orton I guess he’s all better since he’s beating up Jeff Hardy. So there’s a lot of guys I’m gonna have to compete with, just hoping to retain.”
