The Universal Championship picture has changed big-time following Finn Balor’s fatal-4-way win on WWE Raw. He defeated three prime superstars in the main event of the show to become the new opponent for Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble. Previously, Braun Strowman was officially named the challenger for the title at the first PPV of 2019.
The reason why Finn Balor received the title match
The sudden change in the lineup shook up the pro-wrestling universe. Finn Balor is a deserving candidate in the title picture. But he did not have enough momentums by his side to end up on the spotlight. Suddenly, the creative team felt like giving him the opportunity that was a long time coming. Even his biggest supporter dared to imagine this.
But it looks like that the champion himself as the inducer to bring Finn Balor into the title picture. There was always a rumor indicating that Brock Lesnar was willing to fight a guy like him. This match never happened in the WWE, before. Plus, putting a behemoth against a shorter man like Balor would produce a solid match.
According to a recent report by The Wrestling Observer, Brock Lesnar was the one to set up this new match. He personally requested this never-before-happened scenario to give us a fresh matchup. He also wanted this to happen at last year’s Royal Rumble. But obviously, that did not happen since Vince McMahon did not approve it.
Speculations went wild during last year’s Royal Rumble that Finn Balor would indeed get a chance against the beast incarnate. WWE even could not find out proper opponents for the champion at one point. But still, they did not go for the one who was the first-ever Universal Champion. Instead, Kane and Braun Strowman delivered a triple threat.
Also, reports suggest that officials always knew that Braun Strowman was not a good choice. This is a repeated lineup with a predicted outcome. The monster already lost against the beast on two occasions and Royal Rumble could have marked the third time. This is why the officials have thought to arrange this new matchup.
No matter what the rumors suggest this match would indeed be an attraction at Royal Rumble. WWE Universe has not seen this before and likely to get their eyes glued onto this. Finn Balor will surely come up with the fullest resistance despite the mismatch in size. However, the title is not likely to change hands for now since Lesnar is set to go to the main event of Wrestlemania.
