Australia won the fourth Ashes Test match at Old Trafford by a big margin of 185 runs. Craig Overton and the rest of England’s lower order gave some headache to the visitors but could not keep them away from retaining the Ashes. The visitors now lead the five-match series 2-1 with one final match yet to be played.

Australia has retained the Ashes on English soil after a gap of 18 years as they had last won in 2001. It was a great effort from the Tim Paine-led side as they were able to tick the right boxes.

England was 18-2 overnight and Pat Cummins once again provided a great start to the day for the tourists as he picked up two more wickets. Cummins was the pick of the Australian bowlers as he scalped four wickets whereas Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon scalped two wickets apiece.

Mitchell Starc and Marnus Labuschagne took one wicket each. In fact, Marnus Labuschagne took the crucial wicket of Jack Leach when the partnership between the southpaw and Craig Overton started to give Australia something to think about.

Tim Paine brought the leg-spinner into action and he was able to make the most of the rough area. Josh Hazlewood was able to nail the final blow as he plumbed Craig Overton in front of the wickets. Overton showed great resistance with the bat as he batted for more than three hours but could not save his team from going 2-1 down in the series.

On the other hand, former Australian skipper Steven Smith was the pick of the batsman as he scored a sublime double century in the first innings. The talismanic batsman also backed it up with another knock of 82 runs in the second dig. Thus, Smith has made a roaring comeback into the red-ball format.
