On Sunday (6th October) morning, Haryana and Punjab met in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20 where they had a very low-scoring List A encounter. Fighting Haryana was very close but just failed to create a new history of defending the lowest List A total.

It was the Group B stage game at Vadodara where Haryana decided to bat first after winning the toss. Punjab pacer Sandeep Sharma dominated with the ball as he bagged seven wickets. The right-arm pacer managed the bowling figures of 8-2-19-7. Also, another pacer Siddarth Kaul (3/29) took three wickets as Haryana were bundled out for just 49 runs (16 overs).

Among the Haryana batsmen, only the opener and wicketkeeper-batsman Nitin Saini (22 runs) and the middle-order batsman Sumit Kumar (13*) managed the double-digit scores. In that innings, a total of five players failed to open their accounts.

Punjab lost seven wickets

In reply, Punjab managed a horrible start as they were losing the wickets at regular intervals. Apart from the opener Abhishek Sharma, none other Punjab batsmen reached the double-digit figures in that chase. Three batsmen even scored ducks in that innings but Punjab just survived from an embarrassing result.

Punjab finally chased down that 50 runs target in 15.1 overs after losing seven wickets. Only the opener Abhishek Sharma managed to perform with the bat in that innings as he remained not out on 22 runs.

Haryana’s right-arm medium pacer Ajit Chahal shined with the ball in that innings as he had the bowling figures of 7.1-1-32-4. Also, another right-arm medium pacer Harshal Patel (2/12) took two wickets in that innings. However, their incredible efforts finally went in vain.

Just a few days ago, Vanuatu national cricket team created history by defending the lowest List A total. In their match against Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur (25th September 2019), Vanuatu successfully defended their first innings total of 65 runs. To create that world record, Vanuatu broke the 47-year-old record.
