Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is known as one of the big supporters of Mankading. Recently, a Twitter user tried to mock Ashwin on his Mankading beliefs. Later, Ashwin gave him a fitting reply.

In the last few years, Mankading is trending frequently. It is an informal name of a specific kind of run-out where the bowler can run out the non-striker-end batsman during his run-up if the non-striker-end batsman leaves the popping crease before the delivery. In international cricket, former Indian left-arm spinner Vinoo Mankad did this practice for the first time against the Australia cricketer Bill Brown during the 1947 Sydney Test. Since then, this special run-out has been called as Mankading.

This practice is legal according to the cricket rule book. Though many believe that attempting Mankading without giving at least one warning to the non-striker-end batsman is against the spirit of the game, the rule book has never mentioned it or called it as the against the spirit of the game.

Recently, the legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath was asked whether he would consider Mankading if the chance created supposedly in the final moment of the World Cup final. In reply, McGrath said, “No”. A Twitter user with a verified account, named Ahmed, posted that answer and tagged Ravichandran Ashwin.

During the early IPL 2019, Ashwin entered to the controversy for considering Mankading dismissal. It was the match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at Jaipur where the KXIP captain Ashwin mankaded the RR opener, Jos Buttler, without giving him a warning.

Earlier, in the international career, during 2012 Brisbane ODI against Sri Lanka, Ashwin attempted for Mankading to dismiss the Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne. However, then Indian standing captain Virender Sehwag took back their appeal.

Coming back to the present day, after Ahmed tagged Ashwin, the Indian off-spinner politely replied, “Dear sir, Glen McGrath is one of the greatest bowlers to have played the game and I greatly respect his answer for the question but to tell me that it’s the only right answer is wrong on your part.”
