In the opening match of the Women’s T20 Challenge 2020, Velocity beat Supernovas by five wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium (Sharjah).

Velocity captain Mithali Raj won the toss and chose to field first. While Supernovas scored 126/8 (20 overs), Velocity chased down the target in 19.5 overs after losing five wickets.

Velocity innings

On the fifth ball of that innings, opener Danni Wyatt lost her wicket for a duck. In the third over, another opener Shafali Verma was dismissed for 17 runs off 11 balls (4 fours). After the powerplay, captain Mithali Raj (7) was dismissed cheaply in the 9th over as Velocity were struggling on 38/3.

But the next batters fought really hard and those crucial knocks helped their side to successfully chase down the target with one ball left.

While Veda Krishnamurthy scored 29 off 28 balls (4 fours), Sushma Verma scored 34 off 33 balls (2 sixes) and Sune Luus scored 37 not out off 21 balls (4 fours and only six).

Supernovas innings

Openers Chamari Atapattu and Priya Punia set up the 30-run partnership for the first wicket. After Punia was dismissed by 11 runs, Jemimah Rodrigues was also dismissed cheaply as she scored 7 runs.

But then for the third wicket, Atapattu and captain Harmanpreet Kaur built up the 47 runs partnership. After that partnership was broken, Supernovas lost their wickets at regular intervals. Only Atapattu and Harmanpreet managed to reach the 20-run mark in that innings.

While Atapattu scored 44 runs off 39 balls (2 fours and 2 sixes), skipper Harmanpreet scored 31 off 27 balls (only four and 2 sixes). Apart from them, opener Priya Punia (11) and Shashikala Siriwardene (18) managed to reach the double-digit score.

Among the Velocity bowlers, Ekta Bisht (3/22) got three wickets, while Jahanara Alam (2/27) and Leigh Kasperek (2/23) picked up two wickets each.
