Joe Root miraculously somehow survived a controversial leg before the wicket (lbw)decision in the last over of Day 3 of the ongoing second Test between India and England in Chennai.
Sunil Gavaskar, former legendary batsman believes Joe Root should have been given out and would have walked back to the pavilion if the referral was made to the TV umpire as the ball was clipping the stumps on the 3rd day of the second Test between India and England.

Joe Root Trapped In Front In Penultimate Over Of 3rd Day By Axar Patel But Survives
Joe Root was trapped in front in the penultimate over of the day by spinner Axar Patel and India initially appealed for caught behind.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was confident but on-field umpire Nitin Menon was unmoved. After a long discussion between players, India went for the review.
The third umpire went for ball tracking review and although the impact was right in front of the stumps, the decision was not out since the ball had landed outside off stump and the initial decision was not out.

England is 116/8 with Axar Patel picking 4 scalps and Ravichandran Ashwin picking 3 scalps. Joe Root was dismissed after scoring 33 with Ajinkya Rahane taking a catch off Axar Patel who impressed on debut.
Sunil Gavaskar: The ICC Will Need To Have A Look At Umpire’s Call Sooner Rather Than Later
Incidentally, in the 1st innings, Axar Patel managed to dismiss England skipper Joe Root as he miscued a sweep shot and Ravichandran Ashwin took an easy catch to send the England skipper back to the pavilion after he scored only 6 runs as England were bundled for a paltry 134.
“Yes, that’s something that the ICC will have to look at sooner rather than later. That’s been a very contentious thing, this umpire’s call.
“Particularly when it comes to LBWs, if the ball is going to hit the stumps, whether it’s part of the ball or whole of it, the bails are going to go off, very seldom has it happened that the bails stay there.
“So if the referral is made to the TV umpire and if the ball is clipping the stumps, then I think, in my view, it should be given out. Otherwise, there is no point going to the TV umpire,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

“Having said that, there is also the other point of view where if you start giving everything out, then the matches will be over sooner than later because if you actually have a look at the way the ball is hitting or clipping the stumps, it happens pretty much 9 times out of 10.
“So, therefore, that’s another thing that needs to be seen. Surely, the ICC will pick up the matter and the Cricket Committee will come up with a solution,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
All-rounder Axar Patel made his Test debut for India in the 2nd Test match against England and dismissed the opposition skipper Joe Root to earn his maiden wicket.
Speaking about dismissing Joe Root for his maiden Test wicket, Axar Patel said that he was extremely happy to dismiss the in-form batsman and had a plan in place against the England skipper which worked.
Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the ‘Umpires Call’ clause in the Decision Review System, that the International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to reassess. Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar agreed with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s stand on getting the Umpire’s Call reviewed in the Decision Review System (DRS).
