As India beat Sri Lanka with a comprehensive margin of 62 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series, let’s look at some relevant numbers of the match.

Rohit Sharma at top of the world:

As Rohit Sharma scored his 37th run in his innings, he became the leading run-scorer in the shortest format, beating Martin Guptill’s tally of 3299 runs. He scored 3307 runs in 115 innings with 4 hundreds and 26 fifties. Virat Kohli (3296) is not far behind but he has been rested in this series, so Rohit Sharma will have two more chances to take a big lead in the race. Yuzvendra Chahal- leading wicket-taker:

As Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka attempted a reverse sweep against Yuzvendra Chahal but top-edged it to the hands of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he surpassed the tally of Bumrah (66) in T20Is and became the leading wicket-taker for India in this format. Bumrah who was playing T20Is after a long gap didn’t get any success so Chahal held the lead at the end of the match. It will be interesting to see how this race pans out in the remaining two matches.

Anil Kumble holds this record for India in the other two formats with 619 Test wickets and 334 ODI wickets.

Highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper:

After some struggle in the 3-match series against West Indies, Ishan Kishan found his mojo back as he scored a match-winning knock of 56-ball 89 which is a record by any Indian wicketkeeper in the shortest format. Previously this record was held by Rishabh Pant who scored 65* at Providence in 2019.

Overall this record is held by Brendon McCullum who scored 123 against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2012.

Winning streak for India:

This was the 10th consecutive win for India in this format. The last time they lost a game in T20Is, was against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2021. Among Test-playing nations, only Afghanistan had a longer winning streak in T20Is. From February 2018 to September 2019, Afghanistan won 12 consecutive T20Is, earlier from March 2016 to March 2017 they won 11 consecutive games.

Bumrah in a bilateral series:

Jasprit Bumrah made a comeback after a long gap. In T20Is it was even longer. This was the first time in two years when he was playing a T20I game in a bilateral series. The last time he appeared in a bilateral T20I series, was against New Zealand on February 2, 2020. In between, he just played the T20 World Cup held in UAE in 2021.
