In reply, New Zealand finished the day with 28/0 at stumps on day 2, New Zealand is trailing by 529 runs from India’s 1st innings total.

Here are some statistical highlights of day 2 of the 3rd Test:
- i) Indian Test captain Virat Kohli hit a brilliant double century as he scored 211 runs before getting dismissed. It was the second highest individual Test score by a captain against New Zealand. The highest individual Test score by a captain against New Zealand was 217 by Sachin Tendulkar (India) at Ahmedabad in 1999.
ii) Virat Kohli’s 211 was the third highest individual Test score by an Indian captain. The other two top highest Test score by Indian captains were: 224 by MS Dhoni against Australia at Chennai in 2013 and 217 by Sachin Tendulkar against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 1999.
iii) Also, this 211-runs innings was the 6th highest individual Test score by an Indian batsman against New Zealand.
iv) Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score 2 double centuries in Tests and also the first Asian captain to score 2 Test double-centuries in a single calendar year.
- Indian batsman Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane put on an outstanding 365 runs partnership for the 4th wicket. It was India’s 5th highest Test partnership in Test history and 2nd highest Test partnership against New Zealand. India’s highest Test partnership is against New Zealand for 413 runs between the openers Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy at Chennai in 1956.
Also, this 365-runs partnership between Kohli and Rahane was India’s highest 4th wicket partnership in Test cricket history. The previous record was for 353-runs between Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman against Australia at Sydney in 2004.
- Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane also scored a brilliant 188 runs during India’s innings. It was the 5th highest individual Test score by an Indian batsman, coming into bat at no.5 or lower.
- India put on a mammoth 557/5 on the board. It was India’s 3rd highest total against New Zealand in Test cricket history. The top two highest Test total for India against New Zealand are 583/7 decl. at Ahmedabad in 1999 and 566/8 decl. at Nagpur in 2010.
- 4 New Zealand bowlers (Trent Boult – 2/113; Matt Henry – 0/127; Jeetan Patel 2/120 and Mitchell Santner 1/137) conceded more than 100-runs during India’s first innings of this Test. It was the first time that 4 or more New Zealand bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a Test innings against India.
Also, it was the 8th time in New Zealand’s Test history where 4 or more Blackcaps bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a Test innings. Only once more than 4 New Zealand bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a Test innings and that was against Australia at Brisbane in 1993 where 5 New Zealand bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a Test innings.
