On day 5 of the first Test between England and India at Rajkot, India finally survived the Test match. Beginning the day with overnight score 114/0, England scored 260/3 before announcing the declaration of their second innings. India had to need score 310 runs to win this Test.
In reply, Indian batsmen were struggling against the English bowlers. However, India finally managed to save the Test match at the end of the day they were 172/6.

- England skipper Alastair Cook scored a brilliant century on the final day of the Test match. He scored 130 runs before getting out. With this century, Cook achieved many records. Those are as follows:
i) It was Cook’s 5th Test century on the Indian soil. With this century, Cook now became most no.of Test century hitter as a foreign batsman in India.
ii) As an English captain, it was Cook’s 4th Test century on the Indian soil. With this century, Cook also became jointly most of Test century hitter as a foreign captain in India.
iii) Also, this century was Cook’s 12th Test century as an England Test captain. It was the most no.of test century by an English captain. Graham Gooch is now at the second position in this list with 11 Test centuries as an English captain.
iv) Also, this Test century was Cook’s 12th century in a third innings of a Test match. With this Test century, Cook became jointly most no.of third innings Test century hitter along with former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara (12 Test centuries in the 3rd innings of a Test match).
- On this day, Alastair Cook also completed 1,000 Test runs on Indian soil. He became 4th foreign cricketer to score 1,000+ Test runs on the Indian soil. The other three foreign cricketers who had achieved this, before Cook, were: Clive Lloyd (West Indies), Gordon Greenidge (West Indies) and Matthew Hayden (Australia).
- England openers Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed put an 180-runs opening partnership during England’s second innings of this Test. It was the second-highest 2nd innings Test opening partnership on the Indian soil. The highest 2nd innings Test opening partnership on the Indian soil was for 182 runs between Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir against Australia at Mohali in 2008.
Also, this 180-runs partnership was England’s highest Test opening partnership on the Indian soil. The previous best was for 178 runs between Graeme Fowler and Tim Robinson at Chennai in 1985.
- At the end of the day, Indian skipper Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 49. Kohli became the first Indian Test captain, first Test captain in the 4th innings and fourth overall Test captain to remain not out on 49.
- This draw was England’s 14th consecutive winless toss-victory Test on the Indian soil. Last time England had won a Test match on the Indian soil after winning a toss was in 1977 at Chennai.
