Here are some statistical highlights of day 1 of the only Test:

  1. During the opening day of this historical Test, Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara (1,605) became the most runs scorer in an Indian first-class season. The previous record holder was Chandu Borde who had scored 1,604 runs (21 matches, 28 innings) in the first-class cricket during 1964-65.

 

  1. Indian batsmen Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara put on a brilliant 178-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. It is India’s second highest 2nd wicket Test partnership against Bangladesh. The best in this list is a 259-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid at Chittagong in 2004.

Also, it (178-runs partnership) is the 2nd highest Test partnership for any wicket by a team at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal (Hyderabad). The highest Test partnership in this list is 370 runs between the same Indian partners (Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara) for the same wicket (2nd wicket) against Australia in 2013.

 

  1. Indian opening batsman Murali Vijay scored a superb century before getting dismissed. It was second Test century against Bangladesh (first one was 150 runs at Fatullah in 2015) and both were as an opening batsman. Vijay became the 2nd Indian batsman to score more than one Test century as an opening batsman against Bangladesh. Gautam Gambhir (2 Test centuries) was the first Indian batsman to score more than one Test century as an opening batsman against Bangladesh.

Also, this century was Murali Vijay’s 9th Test century and all hundreds as the opening batsman. It is the joint 3rd most no .of Test centuries by an Indian opening batsman. Gautam Gambhir has also same no. of Test centuries as an opening batsman. The top two in this list are Sunil Gavaskar (33 centuries) and Virender Sehwag (22 centuries).

 

  1. During the day, Indian skipper Virat Kohli completed his 1,000 Test runs in the ongoing season (2016/17). Kohli became the first ever Indian skipper to complete 1,000 Test runs in a season.

Also, Virat Kohli became 2nd overall skipper to complete 1,000 Test runs in a home season. Former England skipper Graham Gooch (1,058 runs in 1990) was the first batsman to achieve this remarkable feat. However, Kohli surpassed Gooch on the day and became the most runs scorer as a skipper in a home Test season. At the stumps of the day, Kohli has scored 1,075 runs in the ongoing Test season.

 

  1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli hit a brilliant century as he remained unbeaten on 111 at the stumps of the day. Kohli became the 2nd Indian Test captain to hit a century against Bangladesh. Rahul Dravid (129 at Dhaka in 2007) was the first Indian Test skipper to hit a century against Bangladesh.

Also, this Test century was Virat Kohli’s 4th Test century in the ongoing season which is joint most no .of Test century as an Indian skipper in a season. Sunil Gavaskar had also hit 4 Test centuries during 1978/79.
