  1. It is the maiden Test match at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (Pune) as it became India’s 80th overall Test venue (India’s 25th Test venue on their home soil). Playing this Test match, India now tops the list of Test playing venues. Today India surpassed Pakistan who has played in 79 different Test venues till date.

 

  1. At the age of 20 years and 332 days, Australian young opening batsman Matt Renshaw scored a good half-century as he was dismissed on 68. Playing this Test match, Renshaw became the youngest Australian Test cricketer to play on the Indian soil. The previous record holder was Steve Waugh who had first played on the Indian soil at the age of 21 years and 108 days (at Chennai in 1986).

 

  1. No.8 Australian batsman Mitchell Starc scored a superb half-century as he remained unbeaten on 57 at the stumps of the opening day. It was his second Test half-century on the Indian soil. His first Test half-century in India was at Mohali in March 2013 (99 at the no.9 position). With this second half-century, Starc became the joint most no. of 50+ runs scorer in a Test innings on the Indian soil for a visiting no. 8 or lower batsman. The other visiting no.8 or lower batsmen to achieve this feat are Chris Cairns (New Zealand), Peter Siddle (Australia) and Ian Smith (New Zealand).

 

  1. On the opening day of this Test, Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc also became the most Test runs scorer as an Australian no .8 or lower batsman on the Indian soil. At the stumps of the day, Starc has scored 202 Test runs in India. The previous record holder for this position was Shane Warne with 193 runs.

Overall in a list of most runs for a visiting no. 8 or lower batsmen on the Indian soil, Starc is in currently at the third position. The top two in this list are both Pakistani cricketers Fazal Mahmood (233 runs) and Wasim Akram (219 runs).

 

  1. Australian batsmen Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood put on an impressive 50+ partnership for the last wicket. At the stumps on day 1, their partnership remains unbroken for 51 runs. It is Australia’s third 50+ Test partnership for their 10th wicket on the Indian soil. The other two in this list are – 52 between Jim Higgs and Kevin Wright (at Delhi in 1979) and 66 between Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon (at Chennai in 2013).
