5 Instances When Cricket Greats Turned Selfish

It’s a rare occurrence but sometimes cricketers come down with a bout of selfishness, and when we witness it, generally ugly moments emerge. Protecting your self-interest is natural, but you must know cricket has always been a team game and it’s also true an individual is keen to make his own case, whether it is to preserve their place in the team or to achieve personal goals.

Sometimes it will not affect the team’s cause but there are certain examples where a player’s action robbed off their team’s chances of winning. Take a quick look at five selfish acts by cricketers over the years, which include Tendulkar and Gavaskar among others.

The day when each and every Indian cricket fans were celebrating Virender Sehwag’s thundering 300, the Indian team management had to resolve one of the biggest disputes which can ever take place in a cheerful dressing room. Along with Sehwag on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan in Multan, there was one man who was also notching up one of his regular hundreds and that man was Sachin Tendulkar.

When India reached 675/5, Tendulkar was batting at 194. Stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid decided to have a go at the Pakistan batsmen in the twilight overs of the day and therefore rightly so, declared the innings while Sachin was 6 runs short of his double ton. The Little Master was very upset about the fact that he wasn’t given an opportunity to complete his double century.

“What Indian captains don’t tend to do is declare when Sachin Tendulkar is on 194 not out. The matter became a full-fledged sensation when Tendulkar told a press conference he was disappointed not to get his double century.” It was former Indian coach John Wright’s version.

Tendulkar throughout his career maintained that he always batted for the team and never for himself. But this incident raised a lot of question marks over Tendulkar’s desires.

“I was shocked as it did not make any sense. It was day 2 of the Test match and not day 4, as it had been in Sydney, a month earlier.” Sachin’s statement ignited a new controversy.

Things got really ugly in an IPL 2013 match between KKR and RCB when a verbal confrontation between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli occurred right in the middle of the match. Virat Kohli was caught out in the sweeper cover in the tenth over and KKR captain Gambhir, along with other players converged in the middle to celebrate.

Following an apparent exchange of words between the two, Gambhir suddenly approached angrily towards Kohli, who was still standing at short cover instead of walking back. However, Rajat Bhatia intervened and pushed the two just in time before they could get into a spat, even as the fielders and umpires came to cool the simmering tension. Both Kohli and Gambhir downplayed the event after the end of the match.

During the 2008-09 England vs West Indies series, Sarwan was enjoying the form of his life while scoring 106, 94 and 107 in the first three tests. Coming into the fourth test, West Indies were already 1-0 up and England had to respond which they did stunningly by scoring 600 in their first innings. They started off pretty well with the ball too, removing Gayle cheaply but little did they know about what was waiting for them, what followed after that was a majestic inning from Sarwan.

He forged partnerships with Chanderpaul(70) and Ramdin(166) during his 291 run innings and brought his team’s score close to 600, but heartbreak soon followed when he was bowled by Sidebottom on 291.

Originally a manor house built in the 14th century, Durham’s Lumley Castle was later converted into a hotel but, with rooms without bolts, secret doors and an overwhelming amount of red decor, it’s definitely no Holiday Inn as three West Indies cricketers realised in 2000.

According to folklore, Lily Lumley, the wife of Sir Ralph, the original owner, was murdered in her room by two priests for refusing to follow Catholicism and then thrown down a well. Although a glass panel covers the well today, her ghost is said to wander through the castle every night.

The West Indies trio, which included Jimmy Adams, the captain, didn’t stay long enough to bump into her as an unsettling feeling convinced them to leave the hotel early. Whether that had anything to do with the side losing their two One-Day International matches in the city is anyone’s guess.

Top 5 Cricketing Pairs Who Had Amazing Understanding Between Them

Top 5 Cricketing Pairs Who Had Amazing Understanding Between Them. Cricket is obviously a game of partnerships, be it batting or of bowling. Some batsmen have to endure the toughest conditions and the dangerous bowlers to make things easier for the rest. Meanwhile, some bowlers like to hunt in pairs, one keeping an end quiet and creating pressure for his partner to benefit and the other taking wickets in regular interval.

Over the decades, there have been some amazing batting and bowling pairs who almost had a telepathic understanding when fighting the 22-yard battle shoulder to shoulder. These pairs in turn persistently formed a great shield or a potent force which helped the cause of their team.

Such pairs excelled due to the support they received from the other end and things were rarely ever the same once the partnership was broken.

Here we look at 5 such pairs who achieved great heights together.

No Real Madrid Move, Hazard Set To Stay At Chelsea

Eden Hazard will sign a new £300,000-a-week deal to stay at Chelsea.

The Blues have managed to convince the Belgian forward to sign a new contract as they successfully stave off interest from Real Madrid, according to talkSPORT.

John Terry is also set to stay on for one final hurrah at Stamford Bridge.

Earlier this week, there were reports that Chelsea planning to hold talks with Hazard, despite the Belgian only signing a new £200,000-a-week deal two years ago.

The 26-year-old is in the process of appointing a new agent and that has made the situation more complicated, but the Blues are confident he will stay.

Hazard’s current deal expires in 2020 but Chelsea are willing to extend that by a further two years as well as adding valuable bonuses to his £100k-a-week pay rise.

Blues’ chiefs have also promised Hazard that he can expect the squad to be considerably strengthened this summer as the club prepare to return to Champions League football.

Hazard had earlier hinted he was happy to stay in London, claiming his family were very much settled in the capital.

However, it is never easy to hold off the lure – and money – of giants such as Real Madrid, who were confident they would land their man in a hundred million deal.

A potential deal spooked Chelsea so much, they even started to look at life after Hazard – considering a move for Arsenal man Alexis Sanchez.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT also claims Terry will also sign a new deal at the Stamford Bridge. The contract would almost certainly involve a pay-cut, with JT unlikely to play much in what will certainly be his final season at Stamford Bridge.

Terry had been linked with moves elsewhere, but he is understood to want to stay at the club, after staying on this season on a one-year agreement.

But now it seems the four-time Premier League winner will remain in West London at least another 12 months.

Former Argentina Coach Slams Messi, Says Neymar Better Than Him

Carlos Dibos, the former fitness coach of Argentina has hit out at superstar Lionel Messi claiming that the 29-year-old is not a good leader and that Brazil star Neymar is a better player. Dibos, who in the past too has criticized Messi, believes that he does not have the necessary qualities to motivate the players and that he is no more the best player in the world.

“I do not think it’s wrong for a player to have a dialogue with the coach as to who he prefers or would choose to have next to him, but that player has to have personality, courage, bravery, to be able to carry the team on his shoulders, that was Diego Armando Maradona”, Dibos said.

“That player has to feel that the shirt represents a huge number of Argentines and that we all want the best. Diego represented that and, for me, Leo does not. It doesn’t mean that he is bad. For me, he’s among the three best players in the world, but he’s not the best. Today, Neymar is better.”

Argentina are currently struggling in the South American qualifiers with this latest loss sending them to fifth place with four more matches left to go. They currently have registered 22 points from 14 matches, 11 behind leaders Brazil.
