Tamil Nadu’s left-arm fast-bowler Thangarasu Natarajan has become the latest success story of the Indian Premier League.  Known for his ability to bowl yorkers at will, the fast bowler shot to limelight after his exceptional bowling at the death overs in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

The 25-year old had already created a lot of buzz among the cricket fraternity with his exploits in the domestic circuit and as expected, his name garnered a lot of attention during the IPL auction. The fast-bowler, whose base price was Rs 10 lakhs, was sold to Kings XI Punjab for a whopping Rs 3 Crore after the Punjab-based outfit saw off fierce competition from Rising Pune Supergiants and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

  • Natarajan, who grew up in Chinnappampatti, 36 km off Salem, had a difficult childhood. He is the eldest of five siblings.
  • His father is a daily wage worker in a saree manufacturing unit while his mother sells snacks at a small roadside shop.
  • Till he was 20, the Tamil Nadu pacer played only with tennis ball and had not represented either school or college in the game, and had not even seen a proper cricket ground.
  • With his cricket career looking directionless, he finally took it seriously and moved to Chennai and first played in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) fourth division league representing BSNL in 2010-11.
  • Within two years, he began playing in TNCA first division league. He played for Vijay in 2012-13 before before moving to Jolly Rovers a year later.
  • Three years later, he made his Ranji debut against Bengal at the Eden Gardens.
