On his Ranji trophy debut, under Ravi Shastri’s captaincy, against Haryana in the 1993-94 season, Mazumdar cracked 260, which continues to be the world record for the highest score made on a first-class debut. It certainly shows what a player he would have been if he had application in the International Cricket.
Perhaps, the only thing that went against him was that, at the peak of his form, there was no place in the Indian middle-order that included Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman.
