The Tamil Nadu batsman had done brilliantly for his state but failed to get the same on the International scene. There were also headlines that his place has always been as the back-up wicket-keeper, as MS Dhoni used to be the first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman for India.
Despite that, they tried to give him a place in the team purely as a batsman, yet, he failed to make things fall in place. Karthik has managed to secure only 94 ODI matches since making his debut in 2004.
He got his chance to play in ICC World Cup 2019 but failed to make it count in the single chance, which he got in the semifinal of the tournament. Probably, that would be an end of him unless selectors like to try him one more time.
