14-year Old Ambidextrous Bowler, Opening Batsman Ready To Take TNPL By Storm 1

Left-arm orthodox spinner, right-arm pacer, an off-spinner and an opening batsman – has there been any cricketer in international cricket who possesses or had possessed these qualities.

But let the second edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) commence and the fans will witness such a talent. However, more than these unbelievable qualities, the multi-talented will leave one and all shell-shocked with his age.

Nivethan Radhakrishnan, the cricketer who possess all these qualities, is just 14 and is studying in the ninth standard at the Homebush High School in Sydney. The prodigious teenager first came to limelight when he justified the tag of boy wonder by taking a hat-trick in a TNCA fourth division league match in 2011 at an age of just eight.

In the last six years, Nivethan was not playing in Chennai but was making waves in Australia, scoring big hundreds as an opener and taking wickets – with his left-arm orthodox and off-spin – in junior cricket for New South Wales (NSW). He recently scored 193 in a state match which caught the attention of none other than Australian legends Greg Chappell, Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh.

But the youngster is now back in Chennai and is gearing up to ply his trade in the TNPL for the first time. He had attended a trial with Karaikudi Kaalai and the impressed franchise has bought him.

“It’s great to be back in Chennai.I didn’t watch TNPL last year. However, now I’m in Chennai preparing for TNPL. I’m trying my best to adjust to the weather and the wickets here. But I’m confident of doing well,” Nivethan told The Times of India.

The talented cricketer aspires to emulate legendary Sir Garfield Sobers and also said that his game is pretty much similar to the former West Indies player’s technique.

“I love Sachin’s technique. But I want to emulate what Sir Garry did as a complete all-rounder. I love the West Indies team of his era. I have read almost 16 of his books and my game revolves around most of the techniques that I have read or through the videos I have watched of his. Right from a young age, I have been unorthodox be it batting or bowling.

“I hook often, my feet are in a tangle while I play. I don’t fall in the traditional Chennai style of batting. But I stick to my methods. I want to be adventurous. I can throw left-handed from 30-yards. My father is my coach and he has always let me be the natural cricketer that I am,” said Nivethan.

The 14-year old, meanwhile, is keen to continue his studies and playing cricket in his native country and his performance in the TNPL will play a big role in it. The second season of the TNPL will commence from July 22.
