1st Test: R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja Dent England’s Steady Start At Rajkot

On a windy, tensed and Hillary morning in India, hasty, sloppy and messy were the words to narrate the endeavours of Indian fielders, who allowed the ball to dribble from their hands twice within the first five overs of the day, before, Murali Vijay too joined the forces dropping another undemanding catch. On spinning pitches in India, there is a popular line of thought that if visiting team is able to cross the 30-run mark without a loss of a wicket, the captain gets tensed and introduces spinners. The same demonstration we saw an over after England crossed the 30-run barrier.

Deploying Ashwin on one hand and Ravindra Jadeja on the other, it was the first ball after the drinks which brought a wicket to India when Alastair Cook missed one which was going away from leg-stump. Put in the dilemma of to review it or not, Cook moved to the non-striker debutant Haseeb Hameed, who looked unsure leading Cook to give his wicket to India. The other reason for Cook not reviewing it can be that the verdict was announced by Chris Gaffaney and not Kumar Dharmasena.

Joe Root was the next man in. Hameed might have dreamt to score some runs to blunt the gaffe caused by him but destiny decided to separate him with Root after a distance of just 25 runs when he was trapped in a ploy of R. Ashwin, who started the over with a line marginally outside off coming in a bit on second deal before sealing the stamp on Hameed’s leg placed outside off-stump.

Interestingly, batsman decided to use the technology which showed him thumbs down. No! Double failure for Hameed. He needed the courage to go back to the dressing room but Kumar Dharmsena, who was (un)popular in his last series, was a happy man for making a correct decision. Hameed had a long way back at his so-called second hometown.

Just at the stroke of lunch when England were building upon a partnership, Ashwin’s appetite for a wicket got deeper, who drew an edge off Ben Duckett’s bat on third last ball before Lunch, that landed in Rahane’s hand. Vigilant and cautious umpires, after having another look to know the superiority of the catch showed green signal to Duckett to continue his walk towards the pavilion.

To summarise the first session, it can be said that England team had a good start to the day but an unwise decision not to use technology and two ploys set by R. Ashwin were enough to trump the strong foundation of England team whose scorecard showed figures of 102/3 at lunch.
