When 20-Year-Old Matt Renshaw Impressed Mathew Hayden

20-year-old Matt Renshaw began his Test career with a bang, having scored a fifty and hundred against Pakistan earlier this year, and Australia’s legendary opener Matthew Hayden is all but impressed with rookie’s approach.

Hayden said he is eager to meet the youngster and that Renshaw’s regime of practicing against the turning ball has been noteworthy. Hayden said watching him go through the grind reminds him of his days, when he used to hit the nets before heading to sub-continent for a tour, precisely the record-breaking 2001 series in India.

Speaking about Renshaw’s ability to tackle both pace and spin with ease, Hayden said Renshaw moved him during the Day & Night Test against South Africa, where he weathered the storm of playing under lights after fielding for almost the whole day.

Mathew Hayden said Renshaw impressed him during the Day & Night Test match against South Africa last year.

“For me, weathering the storm as he did (in Adelaide) with eight or nine overs to go at the end of a long day of fielding, getting through that and setting up the side for next day, I think speaks a lot about the quality of Matty.”

Hayden said what he likes about Renshaw is the fact that he shows eagerness to learn about the new conditions, like talking with groundsmen. He further added he hasn’t met Renshaw yet but would love to do sometime in future.

“The fact that even now he’s looking forward to India, he’s creating opportunities with groundsmen to talk about different conditions, learning about the game and what he’s going to face in the next few months, they’re all really positive signs. I haven’t met Matty and I’m looking forward to the occasion when I do.”

Going back in time, Hayden recollected his maiden Indian tour, where he swept almost everything coming his way and amassed a colossal 549 runs in three Tests, including a double hundred in Chennai. He said Renshaw will be judged on the number of runs he scores in those dusty conditions.

Mathew Hayden scored a double hundred against India in Chennai during the 2001 tour.

He further added Renshaw has an astute mind and his strong character will speak for his position in the side.

“You’re often judged on the number of runs, but I think those with an astute mind look at character and look at how you build your innings or how you build your position within the game. They’re all good signs.”

Australia will tour India for four Tests, starting February 23 in Pune.
