2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Bangladesh Scripts History, Mahmudullah-Shakib Show Crashed New Zealand Out Of Multilateral Tournament In Style

Cometh the hour, cometh the men; Mahmudullah Riyad and Shakib Al Hasan scripted a history for Bangladesh on Friday night following some remarkable, encouraging and resounding performance with the willow as the Tigers kept their semi-final hopes alive after knocking out resilient New Zealand out of the eight national 2017 ICC Champions Trophy which is currently being held in the England and Wales.

After Bangladesh was reeling on 33 for four in 11.3 overs, the heroic effort from Mahmdullah and Shakib Al Hasan has made things miserable for the Black Caps bowlers while rotating the strike and kept on punishing the bad balls.

Kiwis’ hopes of a semi-final place for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy have been swept away as Bangladesh claimed an emphatic five-wicket win in the Group A highly-anticipated clash at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, as the visitors clinched another memorable win at the same venue after 11 years.

Shakib, who tried to finish off the things in style, was bowled by Trent Boult after scoring splendid 114 off 115 balls which also put an end to second historic partnership in the multilateral event.

Prolific with the bat, Shakib and Mahmudullah posted a record fifth-wicket partnership of 224 for Bangladesh in One-day Internationals, as the former brought his hundred with a boundary on a pull short, as he remained unbeaten on 102 off 107 balls. At the other end, Mosaddek Hossain scored seven off 4 balls before the crowd erupted in joy and skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was over the moon.

In 12th over, Adam Milne dismissed wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim as he received a thunderbolt which uprooted his middle stump.

The birthday-boy Rahim (14 off 34 balls) was struggling to rotate the strike which further saw no feet moment whatsoever from the Bangladesh top-order,

Tim Southee was on a role with the new ball, and he claimed his third wicket in the fifth over of the innings when he removed left-handed batsman Soumya Sarkar on three off 13 deliveries.

However, Sarkar would have survived the scare had there been a review available as the ball tracker suggests it was missing the stumps.

At the score of 10, Bangladesh lost the second wicket in the form of Sabbir Rahman (8 off 9 balls), when he edged the ball – to give a regulation catch to gloveman Luke Ronchi.

While coming to chase down the target of 266, Bangladesh had an awful start in their run-chase when their batting mainstay Tamim Iqbal was sent back to the pavilion by Tim Southee on the very second ball of the innings, as the delivery wraps him on the pad was Ian Gould raising his dreaded finger.

However, the left-handed batsman asked for a review, but the Tv replays suggested the ball was hitting the leg stump to see Iqbal trudging off the ground after scoring nought in two deliveries.

Earlier, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and straight away opted to bat first against Bangladesh, in the do-or-die clash which saw them posting 265 on board as the Tigers bowlers make a strong comeback at the fag end of the first innings by picking wickets at regular intervals.

However, the Black Caps were restricted to 265 for eight in 50 allotted overs as Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten on 14 off 18 balls and Tim Southee was batting on 10 off 5 deliveries.

For New Zealand, middle-order batsman Ross Taylor was the top-scorer with 63 off 82 balls as his innings was laced with six boundaries.

The right-handed batsman Taylor was caught by Mustafizur Rahman on the bowling of Taskin Ahmed, who was inducted into the squad.

Skipper Kane Williamson, was at his best as he continued his merry run in the ongoing Champions Trophy with the bat.

Williamson scored 69-ball 57 when Shakib Al Hasan pulled a significant run out alongside Mosaddek Hossain.

It was 21-year-old off-spinner Mossadek Hossain, who was the star with the ball as he bagged three wickets after conceding 13 runs in his three overs at the run-rate of 4.33.

Moreover, the 22-year-old Taskin Ahmed picked two wickets in eight overs after conceding 43 runs as he has been recalled into the Playing.

While coming to face youngsters, Luke Ronchi and Martin Guptill gave a decent start to New Zealand after posting 46 in 7.1 overs.

The Tigers draw the first blood when Ronchi (16 off 18 balls), was caught at mid-on region by Mustafizur Rahman on the bowling of Taskin Ahmed after the ball struck high on the bat.

The 33-year-old right-handed batsman Neil Broom, who struggled in the first two games, was among the runs as he posted 36 off 40 balls before being caught by Tamim Iqbal on the bowling of Mosaddek Hossain.

Jimmy Neesham, who tried to stabilise the innings, was removed on 23 after facing 24 balls. He was smartly stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim when Mosaddek Hossain was bowling.

Adam Milne got the peach of a delivery from Rahman when he was batting on seven of eight deliveries, after Corey Anderson, was trapped in front of the stumps by Mosaddek on nought.

Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman picked a wicket each for Bangladesh.
