2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Blessed To Be Playing For India Again, Says Yuvraj Singh Ahead Of His 300th ODI Game

As Team India is gearing up for their Champions Trophy semifinal clash against Bangladesh on Thursday (June 15), there will be one man who will achieve a special milestone when he steps on the field. India’s senior batsman Yuvraj Singh will be playing his 300th ODI and the southpaw, on Wednesday (June 14), said he is blessed to play for the country once again after beating cancer.

Yuvraj Singh had become the toast of the nation after playing a huge role in India’s victorious 2011 World Cup campaign but that happiness soon turned into despair when he was diagnosed with cancer. But life had challenged a wrong person as the Punjab star came out of the war against cancer unscathed.

After struggling for a couple of years to get into the team following his remarkable return to the cricket field, Yuvraj has cemented his place in the ODI team.  And India’s man for the big occasions would surely want to make the match memorable when he walks out against Bangladesh.

“It’s a big achievement for me to face 300 games. When I started playing for India, I was just happy playing one game but it’s come a long way. At one stage, I wasn’t sure if I would play again, but yes, it’s been quite a journey,” Yuvraj said.

Speaking about his attitude, the left-handed batsman said:“The biggest quality in me is never to give up. To keep pushing in life and never backing down have helped me come to where I am. I am lucky that I survived and playing for India. I am in a good zone and don’t want to talk about the regrets.”

“I am blessed to be playing for India again. As long as I am performing, I will like to play for India … hopefully a few more years,” he added.

Yuvraj further said he would continue to motivate people in their fight against cancer.

“Lot of people have been inspired by me not to give up. Cancer is a stigma and I try and motivate a lot of people to come out of it,” said the player who has scored 8,622 ODI runs with the help of 14 centuries and 52 fifties.

“I never gave up. I played three years of Ranji Trophy and that helped. As you grow older, you have to work harder. That’s what I have learnt from my seniors and that’s why I have sustained for so many years,” he added.

India skipper Virat Kohli also paid his tribute to the veteran batsman.

“He is a total match-winner and 300 matches are a testimony to his talent…hopefully he plays a lot more,” Kohli said.
