2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Captain And Coach Can’t Be On Same Page: Sunil Gavaskar
The former India batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar has commented on the Kohli-Kumble controversy that is brewing in the cricketing circles, as he has said that there cannot be a situation in which a captain and a coach can be on the same page,
“You will never have situation, where a captain and a coach will always be on the same page. It cannot happen because the coach is invariably somebody who has played in an earlier generation, so their attitude will always be slightly different,” Gavaskar said at the Aaj Tak Salaam Cricket 2017.
Gavaskar dodged the question and did not answer it directly but yes, he tried to defend the controversy going in the Indian dressing room, according to which there are issues going on between Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Head Coach Anil Kumble.
The alleged controversy between the two started when Kumble wanted to play Kuldeep Yadav in Ranchi Test against Australia but when Kohli did not play him, Kumble played Kuldeep in the very next Test match which Kohli missed due to an injury. As per the reports, Kuldeep was included in the side under the influence of Kumble.
Further, on being asked regarding the best candidate between Ravi Shastri and Kumble, Gavaskar again played it defensively saying no matter the person, a coach should look forward to building a team for next 8-10 years,
“I don’t think this should be taken seriously, this kind of discussion is in fact healthy. The coach should be somebody who is good for Indian cricket. He should have a vision for Indian cricket which would carry Indian cricket forward for the next 8 to 10 years,” Gavaskar said.
The former India skipper played down any news regarding a rift between the captain and the coach in the dressing room. On the other hand, he said that the timing of planting the news is not at all right ahead of the start of Champions Trophy 2017,
“I’m not sure whether these reports of a rift between Kumble and Kohli are true or not but the timing of this is certainly not right. We have got such a big game, which would decide how the Indian team would do in the tournament” Gavaskar added.
With daily progress coming in Kumble-Kohli rift, there are bleak chances of the former captain being retained as the coach due to the fact that certain media reports have allegedly blamed him for leaking the dressing room talks with his close journalists. There are heavy chances of Ravi Shastri coming back to power or Virender Sehwag coming up as a new face in the coaching staff.
India tour of West Indies could be the last tour for Anil Kumble as Head Coach of the side, which will be the biggest irony as it was against the same side Kumble took over the charge as the coach of Men-in-Blue last year.
