2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Chris Woakes Ruled Out Due To Injury
England’s aspiration of winning the Champions Trophy title has taken a huge blow with their all-rounder Chris Woakes being ruled out of the remainder of the eight-team tournament owing to a left side strain.
The 28-year-old bowling all-rounder sustained the injury during the tournament opener against Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday (June 1). He bowled only two overs before leaving the field and then heading for a scan straight away after the match.
The news was confirmed by England and Wales Cricket Board on Friday (June 2).
“A scan has confirmed that Chris Woakes sustained a left side strain in yesterday’s ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh. The injury means Woakes will miss the rest of England’s participation in the Champions Trophy,” read the statement from the cricket board.
Woakes’ absence, meanwhile, did not hurt England against Bangladesh, as the hosts thumped the sixth-ranked ODI side in the world to start their Champions Trophy campaign with a bang. Chasing an imposing 305 runs, the Three Lions rode on fine knocks from Alex Hales (95), Joe Root (133) and Eoin Morgan (75) to chase down the massive total with over two overs remaining.
But as the tournament progresses, England is bound to miss the services of Woakes, as he had emerged as one of the team’s most reliable limited-overs bowlers over the last one year or so. In this year’s Indian Premier League, the right-arm pacer enjoyed an impressive debut season for the Kolkata Knight Riders, taking 17 wickets in 13 matches and playing in an integral role in Kolkata’s journey to the last four stage.
Before that, he had an impressive outing in the ODI series in India too when he emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the three-match series with six scalps to his name.
England is yet to name a replacement for the all-rounder but Steven Finn and Toby Roland-Jones are seen as the leading contenders to make it to the team.
