2017 ICC Champions Trophy – England Eager To Eliminate Australia
The chances are quite high that as of now, you are bound to be extremely frustrated if you are an Australian fan. The Steven Smith-led outfit missed out on a certain win against Bangladesh at the Oval with rain having the final say in the abandoned game which led to the points being shared.
The Kangaroos were just a bare four overs away from constituting the game and eventually winning it on the basis of the Duckworth-Lewis method. However, with nature having other plans and Australia’s first game being washed out as well, the side now needs to win at all costs against England.
Even a washed out game could mean Australia’s exit from the competition and a loss will surely mean that. Up against a daunting limited-overs outfit like England, a team that has already qualified for the semi-finals, Australia are in for some serious challenge.
Post England’s victory over New Zealand, skipper Eoin Morgan hinted that his side had all intentions of knocking out Australia from the tournament.
“We will have a very serious attitude,” Morgan said. “We never take any position that we’ve ever been in for granted.”
“I think if we’re truly going to be contenders for this tournament, we need to beat the best teams. And Australia are one of the best teams.
“They always are going into a white-ball tournament. They seem to produce limited overs cricketers at will.
“So to go into a game like that with no other attitude than winning is very important to us.” “It feels good to be in the semis but we are not satisfied,” he said. “We want to fulfil our potential. We have a lot of work to do.”
Adding about the game against New Zealand, Morgan said,
“We weren’t that pleased at halfway, we were maybe 20 or 30 short of par. I thought we would have got more. “We fell away towards the end, which is disappointing but the fact that we’re still trying to win games with the bat, regardless of the situation that we’re in, I think is testament to the team.
“We’re staying true to what we believe in and what we’ve achieved over the last couple of years.”
