2017 ICC Champions Trophy: England V Bangladesh – Five Turning Points

Joe Root’s elegance filled knocked overshadowed Tamim Iqbal’s hearty effort, as England kicked off their Champions Trophy campaign with a simple eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at the KIA Oval, London on Thursday.

Bangladesh showed great character but was unable to push England to the corner at any point of the game. After being put to bat first, the challengers went on post 305/6 with the help of opener Tamim Iqbal’s 9th ODI century and Mushfiqur Rahim steady half-century.

The target was very far from intimidating, as England, in response, knocked off without much trouble. Alex Hales (95 from 86 balls) set the stage for a successful run-chase. Joe Root impressed with his effortless batting and took care of the rest of the work along with skipper Eoin Morgan (75 from 62 balls)

The match had its moments which played a crucial role in deciding the conclusion. Let’s have a look at five of those.

Chris Woakes leaves the field:

England suffered an unexpected casualty when Chris Woakes walked off the field due to a side strain. The seamer, who opened the bowling for England, was able to bowl only two overs before slowly walking out at the end of the third over. His departure hurt Eoin Morgan’s plans badly. He left one frontline bowler short and had to rely on Joe Root to support. The presence of Woakes would have made a lot of difference in a number of runs England chased later on.

Tamim Iqbal leads the way:

Tamim Iqbal played like a champion. The left-hander lived up to the expectation in the opening game and led Bangladesh’s charge from the front. His 128 runs off 142 deliveries stretched from the first over till the 45th. It involved him giving a stable start, balance in the middle overs and a good platform for the others to capitalise. A 300 plus score would have been impossible without his contribution.

Plunkett denies a huge total:

England was denied any chance to claim regular wickets for the most part of the innings. Bangladesh had Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim, two settled names in the middle and were staring at a possible 320+ score. However, Liam Plunkett smartly intervened and derailed the efforts of the batting side to a great extent. The experienced fast bowler snapped three wickets in ten overs and played a huge role in limiting the opposition to a modest looking 305/6.

Inability to build pressure:

Bangladesh had a good total to defend and started off on a good note with the wicket of Jason Roy. But, the first few overs of the second innings were the only joyful ones for the bowling side, as they failed to restrict the likes of Hales, Root and Morgan from getting big scores. Things could have been interesting had the Bangladeshi managed a few wickets before the 20th overs. However, that couldn’t happen. Root and Hales quickly gained a grip over the situation and orchestrated the perfect chase.

England march away in the final 10 overs:

Bangladesh, despite their inability to pick wickets, could have pushed England to the edge in the final overs of the chase. 75 were required from the last 60 deliveries. A number of runs needed weren’t tough to get. However, Bangladesh could easily let the game slip away. There no hint of an attacking field set nor the likes of Mustafizur and Rubel could create any turnaround with their slower one. The set duo of Root and Morgan just finished the task like a walk in the park.
