India vs Australia 1998 – Defeating an Australian team which had likes of Waugh brothers, Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting was never an easy task. They had a habit of not just dominating the other side but crushing them to thinnest particle but that was not the case when India successfully defended a target of 308 against Australia in the first edition of Champions Trophy, which was known as Wills International Cup at the time of inception.
Riding on brilliant innings of 141 from Sachin Tendulkar, India registered a score of 307 on the board but it looked like it may not be enough as Australia were reeling towards the target with top order batsmen doing the job for the team.
With a score of 2/145 at one stage, the Kangaroos continued to suffer regular jitters and regulars blow meant that they could never be in a race to chase. At the end, they found themselves short by a margin of 44 runs. It was a big turnaround for India as regular wickets dented Australia’s chase and riding on consistent effort, India was able to defend a big total to defeat Australia.
