2017 ICC Champions Trophy: “Need To Be On Top Of The Game From Day One”: Virat Kohli

The upcoming ICC Champions Trophy is probably the toughest test for Virat Kohli, as team India skipper and the 28-year old is under no illusion that it would not be a cakewalk.

Kohli was appointed as the limited-overs skipper in January this year before the three-match ODI series against England and had led the side to a 2-1 win.

But a bigger test awaits when he will have to take the onus on himself to lead the team to another good performance in his first ICC tournament as a skipper, as the Men in Blue will be looking to defend their Champions Trophy title.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure to England, Kohli admitted that there is no room for error in the tournament and even said that the showpiece event, where the top eight teams will be fighting for the coveted trophy, is more competitive than the World Cup.

Kohli insisted that the team would have to be at its best right from ball one failing which will put them in a spot of bother.

“Because the tournament is much shorter and you have got top eight teams in the world, I think the competitiveness of the tournament is much higher from the World Cup. In the World Cup, you still have league games and you have yourself to get into the World Cup and then dominate in the later half but in the Champions Trophy, you need to be on top of the game from day one. If you are not then your chances go down pretty soon,” Kohli said.

But at the same time, Kohli said that the players love the challenging format of the tournament.

I think that is the biggest challenge in Champions Trophy and something that all the players love playing for sure because it’s so competitive and all the fans love watching it. It’s going to get a lot of eyeballs but in general, for the players, that’s the feedback we get. We have to be on top of our game no matter what,” he added.
