On an otherwise memorable day for Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy, the slow over-rate made things a little bit sour for the Men in Green, as captain Sarfraz Ahmed was fined 20 percent of his match fee while the rest of the players were docked 10 percent, respectively for the offence in their thrilling three-wicket win in the must-win game against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on Monday (June 12).

Match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine after Pakistan were found guilty of bowling one over less than its target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

“Pakistan were found to be an over short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration. As per Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount,” stated the release from the ICC.

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Marais Erasmus, third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth umpire Ian Gould.

A second minor over-rate from Pakistan will lead to a one-match suspension for Sarfraz Ahmed.

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the thriller to enter semis:

Meanwhile, led by their captain’s hard-fought half-century, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets to set up a semifinal clash against hosts England. Chasing 236, Pakistan went off to a good start with their openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman adding 74 runs for the first wicket.

However, four quick wickets which reduced them to 110 for four made the run-chase a tricky affair. In a while, they found themselves in further trouble after being reduced to 162 for seven but Sarfraz kept his cool and aided by some poor fielding from Sri Lanka, scored 61 and shared n unbeaten partnership of 75 runs with Mohammad Amir to take his team home.
