2017 ICC Champions Trophy – Sourav Ganguly Demands Complete Overhaul In Pakistani Cricket Structure
Till the mid-2000’s, no team could dare to take on the Pakistani outfit lightly. Any team, which committed this grave blunder met with dire consequences, as the men in green decimated such teams with complete ruthlessness.
The brand of cricket played by Pakistan till the last decade or so could be termed as unpredictable, but it was never short of thrill and all the exciting moments needed to make the shorter formats a great viewing.
With the turn of the decade, however, and the ongoing geopolitical crisis in the nation, Pakistan’s ODI outfit has been reduced to mere shambles. The side which once everyone feared is now turning out to be an easy opponent for teams in multinational events. It isn’t surprising that Pakistan has slipped to number eight in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.
Post their drubbing by the hands of India at Birmingham in the ICC Champions Trophy, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has spoken about the need to drastically change Pakistan’s cricket structure, which he terms as the root cause of all problems.
“Pakistan needs to restructure its domestic system; you have to improve your First Class cricket. You have to play regular cricket,” said Ganguly to reports in Birmingham after the game. “I can’t accept that a country, which has got immense talent, cannot fix its First Class cricket.”
“Something needs to be done for Pakistan cricket. Wasim, Waqar, Javed Miandad, Saleem Malik and senior Pakistani cricketers need to be consulted because a good Pakistani side is important for world cricket. With time their performances are going down,” the former Indian captain added.
“The last intense contest between the two sides was in the 2007 T20 final when Misbah took the game to the end after that nothing such match happened,” he said. “What a team it was in the past. There were Javed Miandad, Salim Malik, Wasim, Waqar, Abdul Qadir. It is a game of cricket- one side wins, one side loses but there should be a competition.”
