2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Steven Finn Ready To Deliver After Multilateral Call-Up

The lanky England fast bowler Steven Finn is hopeful of doing well after earning a call-up to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, as he is expecting to be on his national duty with an aim of proving the point against Kane Williamson-led side New Zealand, in the Group A fixture in Cardiff on Tuesday (June 6).

“Trying to take wickets is the mantra we have tried to adopt as a one-day bowling side and I can help that,” Finn was quoted as saying by Mirror.

The 28-year-old Watford-born pacer Finn is eager to seize the grand opportunity after he was picked at the expense of all-rounder Chris Woakes, who was ruled out of the ongoing eight-team event, as he picked up the side strain during fielding against Bangladesh.

“I never take a backward step and try to be negative or defensive. Taking wickets is always something I try to do,” Finn said.

The right-arm fast bowler Finn feels there is always a thing to perform when one gets inducted into the team straight away while adding he has been trying hard during his hardships.

“You have always got a point to prove when you have been out of the team. It’s always frustrating when you are left out of squads, but you have to roll with the punches,” Finn revealed.

Interestingly, it is expected that Finn has a huge role to play, who could further use his height well – to help the unit after hosts bowlers struggled on a placid surface against Bangladesh, who posted 300-plus mark in the tournament opener following well deserved century from left-handed batsman Tamim Iqbal.

“When you are in and out a bit, when you get an opportunity you feel you always want to go out and take it – especially in a world tournament like this,” Finn remarked.

However, focused on his training, Finn revealed before wrestling against the Black Caps, the bowler has expressed his satisfaction over his practice sessions while stating he would give his best for the nation.

“I have no pre-conceived perceptions about what is going to happen against New Zealand. If I get the call beyond that then I will try my best for my country,” Finn stated.

When England was playing the opener of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Finn claimed three wickets on the same day against South Africa A for English Lions.

“It’s great to be called up. Having played in the Champions Trophy in 2013 I sort of realised what a great tournament it is to be involved in,” Finn further added.

Moreover, on June 3, Finn picked two wickets before being inducted into the 15-man squad of the Three Lions.

“You feel that pressure knowing that they are watching you to call you up for this game. I knew that James Whitaker and Mick Newell were there watching me,” Finn expressed his satisfaction over his bowling.

Finn, who made his international debut in 2010, has played 69 One-day Internationals in which he claimed 102 wickets, at an average of 29.27. He has also bagged two five-wicket hauls and four four-wicket hauls.
