It was the second semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2000 where Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly stood up the rank and led the team from the front, to see Indian team qualifying for the final of the tournament.

He came out to open the innings and for the next 50 overs, was there at the crease as the left-handed batsman played a not out innings of 141* in 142 deliveries to help the side post a big total of 295.

He was well supported by other batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid and Yuvraj Singh as these efforts saw Indian team putting a huge total, which South Africa failed to chase as they found themselves short by a margin of 95 runs.
Ganguly continued his performance in the final as well as he scored another century in the final game against New Zealand but this time, lack of support from other batsmen saw Indian team finishing the day with a total of 264, which New Zealand chased down to lift the trophy.
