2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Waqar Younis Slams Eoin Morgan For ‘Lame Excuse’ After Semifinal Loss

Former Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis has absolutely savaged England captain Eoin Morgan after the latter suggested that a used pitch had been responsible for his team’s humiliating loss against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy semi-final in Cardiff on Wednesday (June 14).

England, who entered the semifinal on the back of three thumping wins in the group stage, were thoroughly outplayed by Pakistan. The Three Lions had scored two 300-plus totals during the group stage but were bowled out for a paltry 210 by Pakistan. And after Pakistan chased down the total inside 38 overs by losing just a couple of wickets, a disappointed Morgan rued playing on the used pitch, telling Sky Sports: “Coming from Edgbaston which was a good wicket to a used wicket, we didn’t adapt very well.”

The hosts had played a group match at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens against New Zealand and had scored 310. However, with the surface being used for the second time in three days, the English batsmen failed to get their timing right on a slower and lower pitch.

Meanwhile, Morgan’s words did not go down too well with Waqar who slammed the England skipper for giving a lame excuse.

“Stop giving that lame excuse Eoin Morgan regarding the used pitch,,,,You guys been thrashed fair n square by Pakistan #CT2017 #PakvsEng,” the bowling legend tweeted.

In another tweet, Waqar congratulated Pakistan for their comprehensive win over the hosts. Nobody was giving the Men in Green a chance to progress in the tournament let alone making it to the final after they were thrashed by 124 runs in their tournament opener by arch-rivals India.

However, Pakistan turned around their campaign in remarkable style, beating South Africa and Sri Lanka before coming out on top against England to qualify for their maiden Champions Trophy final and also the first final appearance in a global 50-over tournament since the 1999 World Cup.

Delighted with the memorable win, Waqar tweeted:“PAKISTAN ZINDABAD??????You guys are The Champions..Just keep going boys #ChampionsTrophy2017 Oval we are coming ???”

Pakistan will take on the winner of the second semifinal between India and Bangladesh in the final on June 18 at the KIA Oval in London.
